Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #77

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Amazing Spider-Man, Ben Reilly has replaced Peter Parker as the iconic web-slinger, though he may have just been turned into a vampire thanks to Morbius. While working for the Beyond Corporation as their corporate-backed Spider-Man, Ben Reilly was sent to investigate a crime scene where he came face to face with Michael Morbius. While Morbius has been working to redeem himself in recent comics, it seems as though the pseudo-vampire has taken a turn for the worse, attacking the new Spider-Man – which could potentially lead to some disastrous consequences.

Thus far in this new Spider-Man Beyond eraPeter Parker is in critical condition after a brawl with the U-Foes led to intense radiation poisoning, overloading the original Spider-Man’s body with the very source of his powers. However, Peter’s clone Ben Reilly has stepped up as the new Spider-Man, backed by the Beyond Corporation, which owns the Spider-Man name and likeness. Having received Peter Parker’s blessing, Ben has been patrolling the streets of New York, attempting to be the best Spider-Man he can be. But things have potentially taken a dark turn in Amazing Spider-Man #77 from writer Kelly Thompson and artist Sara Pichelli.

In the new issue, Spider-Man spends some time training with his fellow Beyond Corp. heroes Misty Knight and Colleen Wing (aka The Daughters of the Dragon). Afterward, Ben is called upon to investigate a disturbance, finding none other than Morbius the Living Vampire standing amidst a group of unconscious doctors. Morbius seems confused and not himself, growling for Spider-Man’s blood. The New Spider-Man notes that Morbius seems to be stronger and faster than he remembered, resulting in Morbius getting the drop on Ben and seemingly biting the wallcrawler’s neck by the issue’s end, which could lead to the new Spider-Man being turning into a pseudo-vampire like Morbius himself.

While the possibility exists that Ben’s advanced suit, made for him by the Beyond Corporation, will protect him from Morbius’ fangs breaking his skin, it would be interesting to see a vampiric web-slinger (even if only for a few issues). It would certainly be a new challenge, one that would undoubtedly cause some significant problems for Ben’s corporate masters and his overall marketability to the public. Of course, there would also be the usual vampire problems Ben would have to deal with on a personal level, like an aversion to sunlight and the typical bloodlust.

While Michael Morbius is not a vampire in the traditional sense – having undergone his transformation due to an experiment to cure his rare blood disease – he still has the power to turn others into vampires with a bite. Has the New Spider-Man been turned into a vampire as well thanks to Morbius? Fans will have to wait as the Spider-Man Beyond era continues.
