Warning! Spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal El #1 by DC Comics below

Kal-El just passed the torch of Superman to his son, Jon Kent, by giving him his own Superman costume with special meaning. In the newest issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El, the Man of Steel gives his son an early birthday present, giving him a new Superman suit which includes a cape that he originally wore. It’s a touching moment between father and son.

In current Superman comics, Clark Kent has made sure that his son Jonathan is ready to replace him, as his prophesized death hangs heavy over both their heads. While in the future with the Legion of Super-Heroes, Jon discovered his dad was set to disappear after a battle against a group of aliens. To prepare for a future without the original Superman, Kal-El has passed the mantle onto Jon. The young hero has already shown the potential to become a hero as great as Superman, but when self-doubt starts creeping in, his father just reassured his doubts in a big way.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 by Tom Taylor, John Timms, Gabe Eltaeb, and Dave Sharpe, Jon gets ready for his first day back at school, wearing a disguise to not stand out. However, when someone brings a gun to school and opens fire, Jon is forced into action, as his classmates learn the truth about Superman being one of their classmates. After realizing he can’t pretend to be normal and flying to the moon to reflect on what just happened, Jon is met by his father. After encouraging Jon he’s capable of protecting his homeworld, the pair fly to the Fortress of Solitude, where Kal-El offers his son a new costume.

At the Fortress of Solitude, Superman reveals he intended on giving Jon the suit for his eighteenth birthday, but that his time with the Legion of Super-Heroes, where he came back older than before, made the gift appropriate now. Superman hands his son a new costume while telling him the cape was his when he was younger – and that Batman fixed the previous battle damage to the suit. With the costume, Jon Kent begins his new journey as DC’s Superman.
