Fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas can rejoice, because Disney’s beloved stop-motion film is getting a sequel book focused on Sally. Directed by Henry Selick, The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993 and, over the years, has become something of a cult classic. The film tells the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, after he accidentally finds himself transported to another holiday-themed land: Christmas Town. Amazed by the joy he finds around him, Jack decides he’s going to take over Christmas and become Santa Claus, but he’s utterly unprepared for what happens when he does.

These days, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a staple of both the Halloween season and Christmas, making it a special kind of holiday movie. However, despite the popularity of the story, there has never been a proper sequel. A video game, The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, was released in 2004 and has been the closest thing to a second film fans have received. Now, though, the events following The Nightmare Before Christmas will get a second look… just not as a movie.

According to io9, Disney Publishing will release a new book centered exclusively on Jack’s love Sally following the events of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Shea Ernshaw (The Wicked Deep, Winterwood) will write the YA novel, which is currently untitled. The book will follow Sally and Jack, happily married now, when their lives are thrown for a loop. Sally has accidently let a mysterious villain loose on Halloween Town, leading her to venture out on a quest to other holiday worlds as the Pumpkin Queen to figure out how to save her home. She’ll also wrestle with new discoveries about her past life. Ernshaw said about the novel:

“This new book, written from the point of view of Sally, takes place shortly after the movie ends. It’s the yet-to-be-told love story of Sally and Jack. But it’s also a coming-of-age story for Sally, as we see her navigate her new royal title as the Pumpkin Queen of Halloween Town. [It] will hopefully give fans a long-awaited second dose of Sally, Jack, and all the familiar residents of Halloween Town, while introducing a new cast of grim, strange characters, that I hope readers will love.”

Ernshaw went on to say that while The Nightmare Before Christmas was an exploration into Jack’s identity, this new book will do the same for Sally. “In this book, I really wanted to explore Sally’s identity, and better understand not only who she is now that she’s fallen in love with Jack and taken on the role of the Pumpkin Queen, but also understand how her past has affected her present desires, doubts, and dreams,” Ernshaw explained. This comprehensive look into Sally’s wants and motivations will be published sometime in July 2022, and it sounds like a must-read for fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The best sequels and story expansions are the ones that shed more light into the supporting characters in a meaningful way, and this book sounds like exactly that. Sally plays a pivotal role in The Nightmare Before Christmas, but as that movie is primarily about Jack and his plans for Halloween/Christmas, there isn’t as much of an opportunity to really dig into Sally. Luckily, this book will rectify that in a major way. It’s just a shame it’s still well over a year away.
