As an accountant for Dunder Mifflin Scranton, Kevin Malone is part of the three-man team in charge of the numbers. However, unlike his co-workers Angela and Oscar, Kevin is special. Numbers and professionalism aren’t his forte. In fact, he really doesn’t have any responsibilities at all. It’s actually surprising he held on to his job for nine seasons!

Kevin is a sweet man with simple pleasures. As he said on Beach Day, eating hot dogs on the beach is all he ever wanted. However, his sweetness doesn’t replace the fact that he’s messed up a lot. Maybe not as much as Michael or Dwight, but he sure has had his screw-ups. Keep scrolling to see 10 of his biggest mess-ups!

10 Spilling The Chili In The Office

In season five, the episode “Casual Friday” starts off with Kevin unloading a massive pot of chili out of his car and into the office. He explains that his chili is famous and that he makes it for the office once a year.

He stays up all night pressing garlic and roasting chilis so that people can “get to know each other around the pot.” It’s one few the things he does best, according to him. However, once he entered the office, he didn’t get very far. He spills the entire pot in the middle of the office and tries to put it back into the pot before it’s too late. But as you can imagine, it was too late.

9 He Was Unaware He Was Doing Some Insider Trading

In the third season, the Scranton branch absorbed the Stanford branch which brought new blood to the office. One of the office’s newest employees was a man named Martin Nash, who happened to be a former convict. Thanks to Michael, everyone’s imagination ran wild, wondering why Martin was in prison. Eventually, it comes out that Martin was involved in some insider trading and was arrested for it. Kevin looked stunned and admitted that he asked Martin to explain what insider trading was because it sounded a lot like what he did. Every. Single. Day.

8 His Shoes Were So Smelly That He Had To Wear Tissue Boxes

We don’t know what home life is like for many of the characters on The Office. We did get a glimpse inside Jim and Pam’s house, Oscar’s apartment, and Michael’s condo, but fans were curious about Kevin. If he was that lazy at work, what does his home look like?

We got a small glimpse at how poor his home life and hygiene were during Jim and Pam’s wedding. After asking the hotel staff to clean his shoes, they ended up throwing them out because they smelled so bad! Kevin didn’t have a backup so he ended up wearing tissue boxes as shoes instead…

7 He Made Up A Number When He Was Confused

We don’t see Kevin doing too much math. The only time we saw his mind at work was when he was calculating how many pies he was going to eat!

At the end of season nine, we learn that Dwight fired Creed, Toby, and Kevin. It was obvious Creed was shady and didn’t even have a title and that Toby didn’t take his responsibility as an HR rep very seriously. Likewise, Kevin wasn’t good at his job. Oscar even told his intern that when the numbers didn’t add up, Kevin would use a symbol called “Keleven” to make the numbers work…

6 When He Tried To Simplify His Speech (But Over Complicated Everything)

After realizing his Spanish-speaking mechanic gets a lot of work done by using little English, Kevin tries the same thing. One day at work, Kevin put his new theory to the test after Jim asked him to do something. Both Jim and Pam were confused as to why Kevin was missing words in his speech but Angela said he was always that way.

After a quick meeting, Kevin said he’s skipping words on purpose because it saves time. On the contrary, it actually made everything confusing and more time-consuming (and even made people think he had a concussion).

5 He Canceled Jim’s Credit Card While He Was On His Honeymoon

After Jim and Pam’s Niagra Falls wedding they went away for a much-deserved honeymoon. The Office’s favorite couple were finally hitched! While they were gone though, Kevin decided to “work” in Jim’s office. But in classic Kevin form, when the credit card company called Jim to see if he was, in fact, using his card in Puerto Rico, Kevin answered the phone and pretended he was Jim…

Since Jim answered his phone in Scranton, the credit card company canceled his card in case of fraud. Now Jim and Pam were essentially stuck in Puerto Rico while Kevin was shaking in his boots in Scranton.

4 When He Ran Over A Turtle

In the episode “New Guys,” Kevin brought a turtle he ran over into work. After crushing the turtle with his car, Kevin was distraught. He decided to bring the turtle into work to try and repair his shell. Grabbing everything he could from the office, he tried gluing his shell back together. But after a few attempts, he realized the turtle was dead. In fact, he probably died the first time when Kevin ran him over. RIP, lil guy.

3 He Shredded His Credit Card And Broke The Shredder

We don’t see Kevin doing too much work but when Angela asked Kevin to shred important documents in “The Merger,” Kevin was pumped to start shredding everything he could.

After getting bored of company documents, he tried shredding a CD and later his own credit card! His credit card seemed to be the final straw though because they shredder stalled and broke. Maybe that’s why Angela and Oscar didn’t ask him to do too much around the office.

2 He Didn’t Know How To Transfer Phone Calls

In the episode “Dream Team,” acting manager Charles Minder appointed Kevin Malone to reception. Having Kevin at reception seemed like a great idea since it doesn’t take much effort answering the phone, but as per usual, it was too big of a request for Kevin.

Kevin panicked when it came to transferring phone calls to the other workers. He tried his best but kept failing, which made him run across to each person’s desk to relay the call, to all of the workers’ dismay.
