Out of all the couples on The Office, the fate of Jim and Pam were most important to fans. Jim and Pam had such a whirlwind of unspoken emotions and quick looks to the cameras that viewers felt the tension between them. Through an engagement, a broken engagement, and a transfer to Stamford (and back again), Pam and Jim were finally able to get the timing right in season four.

In season six, a wedding was finally happening at Niagara Falls in a two-part episode. With the entire crew of Dunder Mifflin heading to Niagara Falls for the wedding, chaos and hilarious moments unravel. To get a little behind-the-scenes action from “Niagara Part 1” and “Niagara Part 2,” keep scrolling!

10 It’s All In The Family

In “Niagara Part 1,” Pam and Jim are seen checking into their respective hotel rooms for the night. They confirm that they’ll have the honeymoon suite for the following night after their wedding but upon learning Andy was staying the suite the night before, the romance shifts.

Funny enough, the hotel receptionist taking care of Jim and Pam is played by actress Michelle Gunn. In real life, Michelle and Jenna Fischer used to be sisters-in-law as they were both formerly married to James Gunn and Mathew Gunn (brothers), respectively.

9 John Krasinski & Jenna Fischer Got ‘Married’ In Front Of The Public

In case fans were wondering about the Maid of the Mist scene, the people on the boat were not extras — they were real Maid of the Mist passengers trying to get a closer view of Niagara Falls.

Director Paul Feig told Entertainment Weekly that they weren’t allowed to rent the boat for the day, meaning they had to make the scenes work without a bunch of help. The Office crew on set wished no one on board spoiled the surprise ending before it was released on TV.

8 Fans Can Stay At The Hotel Jim & Pam Stayed At

In the episode, there’s an exterior view of The Red Coach Inn in Niagara Falls, New York, where the guests were supposedly staying. In real life, however, the interior shots were filmed at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, which was closer to The Office’s actual stage. Regardless if fans were in Niagara Falls or Studio City, both are still open and can be visited!

7 The Episode’s Original Ending Included Roy

“Niagara Part 1” and “Niagara Part 2” were done beautifully with extreme attention to detail. This was a big moment for not just Jim and Pam but for all of Dunder Mifflin who watched this couple grow over the past six seasons. However, Pam and Jim almost didn’t get their perfect ending.

Greg Daniels and Mindy Kaling wrote this episode together and originally had an outcome that involved Roy! Daniels wanted Roy to show up at the alter on a horse to win Pam back just before the couple said, “I do.”  By the time they did the table read, however, his idea was shot down. As Daniels said, “The entire staff and actors were yelling at me: ‘Don’t ruin Jim and Pam’s wedding with a horse!’”

6 John Krasinski Was Super Sick During Shooting

The Maid of the Mist shots were some of the best from the episode. Both Jim and Pam looked so beautiful on the boat, regardless if they were getting splashed on or not. But the scene wasn’t as romantic as it looked because Krasinski actually had a bad cold while filming. He joked that the most important kiss of the entire series was “actually just me giving her a huge kiss on the cheek because I didn’t want to get her sick.”

If fans re-watched the scene where they kiss on the boat, Jim really does lean down for a kiss on the cheek as Pam throws her arms around him for a hug.

5 Erin Gives A Little Show

When the surprise dance scene breaks out at the church, everyone from Dunder Mifflin (except for Toby) does a dance down the aisle. Since Andy tore his scrotum the night before, he hobbled down the aisle with a walker while Erin danced around him. But if viewers watch closely, Erin’s dress actually goes higher than expected when circling Andy and her undies make an appearance in the final cut. The movement is so quick that viewers didn’t notice, though.

4 Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due?

Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz got married in 2009 and went completely viral after surprising their guests with a dance down the aisle to Chris Brown’s “Forever.” The couple became instantly famous for creating such a memorable moment at a wedding.

Luckily for The Office, this was around the same time they were filming Pam and Jim’s wedding, so they decided to do a parody of the original video. Some fans claim that the couple was asked to be in attendance at Jim and Pam’s wedding (i.e. the woman with the flower in her hair and the man next to her) but according to their website, that was not the case! They didn’t know it was happening until they watched the show on TV!

3 There Were No Trailers For The Niagra Falls Shot

With limited space aboard the Maid of the Mist, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, and co. had to use the little time and tools they had to make the scene work. Without trailers to change and get ready in, Jenna Fischer literally walked out of the hotel room in Niagara Falls in her wedding dress and headed for the Maid of the Mist. When the scene was over, everyone was sprinkled wet from the Falls but they had to make it work without those Hollywood trailers!

2 They Did Two Takes

Only a few people from the crew went aboard the Maid of the Mist to make Jim and Pam’s wedding scene work. Knowing how loud the Falls were, they knew they wouldn’t be able to pick up much sound so they had to make sure the visuals were perfect.

The crew shot the scene without problems in the morning but went back in the afternoon to secure the moment. Funny enough, their second attempt was crazier than the first because they were all soaked from the boat. Due to the wind and the Falls sprinkling the camera, they kept the second shot for the episode because it felt more real.

1 Jenna Fisher Didn’t Know The Surprise Dance Was Happening

In 2019, Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski got together to talk about the wedding episode’s 10-year-anniversary. According to Complex, Jenna didn’t know the dance scene was happening, just like in the show! Fischer said, “I hadn’t seen it, they’d all been rehearsing it, and then I was very frustrated that I was stuck in the back of the church.” As one can imagine, she cried when she finally saw the wedding come together and knew how special the moment was.
