The Office: Every Halloween Episode

The Office sure knew how to get into the seasonal spirit with annual holiday episodes – and Halloween was certainly among them, along with their special Christmas episodes. The employees of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch were always excited for their office parties, especially the annual Halloween party. In total, The Office had six different Halloween episodes.

Michael Scott was never one to turn down fun when it came to lifting the morale of his employees. Parties were a major part of keeping up the spirits of his workers which was why the Scranton branch had a Party Planning Committee. A lot of effort was put into the annual Halloween bash and that continued even after Michael left the company.

Some of the employees put more thought into their costumes than others (namely Jim) but it was always fun to see the characters dress up in correlation with pop culture moments from that timeframe. Out of the nine seasons of the series, six of them featured Halloween-based episodes. Here’s a guide to every Halloween episode from The Office.

Season 2, Episode 5 – “Halloween”

The first Halloween episode in The Office came during the sitcom’s second season. Michael was informed by Jan that he must fire someone by the end of the month for budgetary reasons. The manager waited until the very last day, Halloween, to make the tough decision. Even though the employees are all dressed up to celebrate Halloween, the firing put a dark cloud over the branch.

Season 5, Episode 6 – “Employee Transfer”

In “Employee Transfer,” Pam was the only one in the corporate office who dressed up for Halloween. She couldn’t remove her costume because she was dressed as Charlie Chaplin and was unable to remove her painted-on mustache. Back in Scranton, Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight was a big hit as Creed, Kevin, and Dwight arrived in the same costume. As usual, Jim wasn’t too keen on dressing up so he put on a nametag and pretended his name was Dave.

Season 6, Episode 8 – “Koi Pond”

In the original cold open of “Koi Pond,” the employees put together a haunted warehouse for the children in the area. It featured Jim in his Facebook costume which was just the word “book” written across his face. Many viewers might not remember the scene since it was removed after the episode premiered. Some viewers were outraged since it included Michael simulating a suicide.

Season 7, Episode 6 – “Costume Contest”

“Costume Contest” was the last Halloween episode that featured Michael before Steve Carell left The Office later that season. The branch was excited about the annual costume contest but even more so when Pam announced the prize would be a coupon book with $15,000 in savings. Despite the contest, Jim was reluctant to wear his Popeye to match Pam’s Olive Oyl. He later gave in and even brought their daughter to the party dressed as Swee’Pea. The contest got very competitive causing many of the employees to change costumes throughout the day. Some of the costumes included Lady Gaga (Gabe), Sookie Stackhouse (Meredith), the Scranton Strangler (Dwight), and Michael Moore (Kevin).

Season 8, Episode 5 – “Spooked”

In the season 8 Halloween episode, “Spooked”, Erin was assigned to set the annual holiday party. In an effort to impress Andy, she tried to make it more spooky rather than childish so she got assistance from the master of the macabre, Gabe. Meanwhile, Jim and Pam argued about the existence of ghosts. The episode also featured some standout costumes like Ryan dressing up as Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad.

Season 9, Episode 5 – “Here Comes Treble”

The final Halloween episode of The Office occurred through “Here Comes Treble”. As the current manager of the Scranton branch, Andy wanted to make the Halloween extra special so he invited his old Cornell a capella group to perform. Andy, dressed as George Michael then got upset when he learned that his friend Broccoli Rob (Stephen Colbert) took credit for his college nickname and popular songs. The episode also notably featured Dwight getting his head stuck in a jack-o’-lantern after trying to scare Erin.
