Devon White nearly served as a recurring figure on The Office, but the character disappeared in the middle of season 2. The figure, played by Devon Abner, was primarily seen throughout the NBC sitcom’s debut season as a background actor. Here’s what happened to the character, and how Devon’s arc came full circle on The Office.

Devon was often shown working in the background of scenes since he served as Dunder Mifflin’s supplier relations representative. That position was presumably shared with his co-worker, Creed Bratton, who was thought to work in the Quality Assurance segment. Unlike figures like Michael Scott, Dwight Schrute, Pam Beesly, and Jim Halpert, Devon wasn’t often the focus of key subplots. In fact, the character didn’t have a direct speaking part until The Office season 2.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

During the season 2 episode, “Halloween,” Michael was required to fire someone in an effort to downsize, which was a similar situation that The Office was facing. Rather than do it early in the month of October when he was informed, Michael waited until the last day of the month, which was also the day of the workplace’s Halloween celebration. After multiple failed firing attempts, Michael decided to let go of Creed, but the man convinced his boss to fire Devon instead. The downsizing news didn’t go over too well with Devon, so he tried to use his friendship with Michael as a way to save his job. It didn’t work, and Devon angrily left Dunder Mifflin building before smashing a pumpkin on his former boss’s car. That, however, wasn’t the end of Devon on The Office.

Devon Was Brought Back For The Office’s Final Episode

Eight years later, Devon returned to Dunder Mifflin after he was rehired by Dwight, who was promoted to the regional manager at the end of the series. Ahead of the time jump leading to the finale, Creed faked his death to avoid prosecution for various crimes so Dwight was in need of a Quality Assurance manager. Rather than hire someone new, Dwight went with someone who had knowledge of the position. The series was given the opportunity to invite Abner back to reprise his role as a way to pay homage to the show’s beginnings. The actor felt like he had to accept the offer, resulting in a quick trip to the set.

Interestingly enough, that wasn’t Devon’s first appearance since being fired in “Halloween.” The actor popped up in a deleted scene in another season 2 episode titled “Valentine’s Day.” Set months later, Michael traveled to New York City to meet with members of the Corporate headquarters. While walking around the city, Michael ran into Devon, who became homeless after losing his job. Devon chased him down the street since while Michael cluelessly remarked how good it was to see him again. This just added to the fact that the writers of The Office were experts in callbacks to earlier events depicted in the series.
