Before Jim Halpert officially revealed his feelings for Pam Beesly in The Office, he was prepared to let his Christmas gift do the talking. Jim picked Pam as the recipient of a Secret Santa gift exchange so he got her a teal teapot. The real gift, however, was hidden inside the teapot since it contained a number of bonus presents.

Jim’s teapot gift to Pam took place during The Office season 2 in the episode, “Christmas Party.” Every employee within Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch was assigned a coworker to purchase a gift for. The gift exchange started off fine until Michael revealed that he bought Ryan a $400 iPod. Michael was upset that he didn’t receive a costly gift so he forced the employees into doing a Yankee Swap. This didn’t go over too well since each gift was meant for a specific person.

At one point Pam picked the iPod over the teapot much to the dismay of Jim. By the end of the episode, she revealed that she traded the iPod to get back Jim’s gift, realizing that it was meant specially for her. Jim then revealed that the teapot held a bunch of mini gifts. There was a cassette (presumably some type of mixtape), a high school yearbook photo of Jim, a Boggle timer, two hot sauce packets that Pam mistook as ketchup, and a miniature golf pencil which Pam once threw at Jim after losing. The teapot also held a card with a message revealing Jim’s true feelings for Pam but he took it out before she opened the lid to see the contents. This holiday episode would not be the last time the teapot gift appeared in The Office.

How The Teapot Gift Came Into Play In Later Seasons Of The Office

In The Office season 4, Pam, Oscar, and Toby started the “Finer Things Club.” The exclusive club was meant for members to discuss literature, music, and the arts. The trio met regularly in the break room to celebrate culture while acting in a civilized way. Due to the exclusivity of the club, many coworkers were blocked from joining. While Pam, Oscar, and Toby met as part of the Finer Things Club, the teapot given by Jim years prior could be seen sitting on the table.

The exact contents of Jim’s note to Pam inside of the teapot gift remains one of the biggest mysteries from The Office. In season 9, Jim got help from the documentary crew to make a DVD full of highlights of his relationship with Pam throughout the series. The DVD featured a scene with the teapot, revealing that Jim took out the note. After watching the DVD, Jim handed Pam the unopened note which he had kept for all of those years. Viewers never learned what Jim said in the note, but after Pam read it, the pair emotionally embraced.
