As with Damon and Stefan Salvatore of The Vampire Diaries, Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson were two vampire brothers who shared a complicated and bloody relationship. Both were Original vampires who were unwillingly turned by their mother, and have fought together and against each other throughout the centuries.

Elijah was loyal to his hybrid half-brother despite the terrible things Klaus did. Not even his brother was safe from Klaus’ wrath, though Elijah retaliated for the pain his brother caused him. Here are the five worst things Klaus did to Elijah and the five worst things Elijah did to him.

10 Klaus: Killing Their Mother

The Original family had a complicated relationship. Their mother Esther cast a spell that transformed her children into vampires and suppressed the werewolf heritage of their half-brother Klaus, prompting the hybrid to kill her.

Klaus kept this a secret from Elijah and their siblings over the centuries. Despite his love for his family, the Original hybrid had a toxic temper that not even his loved ones were safe from.

9 Elijah: Daggering Klaus

In the second season of The Originals, the family faces a powerful threat in the form of their aunt Dahlia, who arrives in New Orleans intending to kidnap Hope. Klaus and Elijah argue over the best methods to protect Hope, which leads to Elijah daggering Klaus.

Klaus takes false credit for the murder of Aiden which enrages the werewolves and provokes war in the city. Despite his love for his brother, Elijah has to do what is best for Hope and their home.

8 Klaus: Daggering Elijah Countless Times

Elijah neutralizing Klaus with a dagger in the show’s second season was overdue recompense for the countless times Klaus has daggered Elijah and the rest of his siblings. Elijah was daggered by Klaus several times in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, with the Original hybrid storing his brother’s neutralized body in a coffin.

Despite Elijah’s unwavering loyalty to him, Klaus continuously demonstrated a cruel disregard for his brother. As with all of his siblings, Klaus’ temper and fear of abandonment prompted him to dagger him whenever they disagreed.

7 Elijah: Falling For Hayley

Elijah and Hayley’s relationship is one of The Originals’ most popular and beloved romantic pairings. Elijah first met Hayley after returning to New Orleans and discovering the young werewolf was pregnant with his brother’s child.

Although Klaus and Hayley were never officially together, the romance between Elijah and Hayley provoked considerable tension between the brothers. Like the Salvatores, Klaus and Elijah were no strangers to fighting over women in the past.

6 Klaus: Causing Celeste’s Death

Klaus repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the lives of other people in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. This disregard extended to his brother’s significant others, whose lives held no merit for the Original hybrid.

Klaus causes the death of Elijah’s lover, Celeste Dubois, in the early 1800s, blaming the witches for the murders he committed. Elijah tries to save his lover but is too late, finding her body in the bathtub and believing her to be dead.

5 Elijah: Killing Tatia

Like Stefan Salvatore, Elijah is defined by his honor and reluctance to kill which is a stark difference to his vicious siblings. However, Elijah was not always capable of denying his vampire nature and learns from his mother Esther during the second season of The Originals that he killed his former lover Tatia.

Tatia was the original Petrova doppelganger whose blood bound Klaus’ werewolf genes. Both brothers were in love with her and she cared for them both, though ultimately chose Elijah.

4 Klaus: Rejecting His Help

Despite everything that Klaus has done, Elijah refused to break their “always and forever” vow and continued to stand at his brother’s side, believing him capable of redemption. Klaus rebuffs Elijah’s help continuously throughout The Originals, turning against his brother and the rest of their family.

In season one of The Originals, Elijah attempts to help Klaus and believes his unborn daughter with Hayley to be an opportunity for redemption. However, Klaus puts his desire to take back New Orleans from Marcel first and daggers his brother.

3 Elijah: Almost Killing Klaus

Elijah is the first member of the Original family to be introduced in The Vampire Diaries. Although he is originally an antagonist, Elijah conspires with Elena and her friends to kill Klaus whilst he is performing the ritual to break his werewolf curse.

Elijah nearly succeeds in killing Klaus with the help of powerful witch Bonnie Bennett. However, after Klaus reveals that he knows the location of their family, Elijah spares his brother and flees.

2 Klaus: Killing Gia

In a cruel bid for revenge after Elijah daggered him, Klaus kills his brother’s lover Gia in season two of The Originals by compelling her to remove her daylight ring. Although Elijah tries to save her, Gia bursts into flames and dies in front of him in the same manner as Isobel’s death during the second season of The Vampire Diaries.

Klaus was trying to deceive their evil aunt Dahlia at the time but this was still a cruel blow to Elijah and a tragic fate for Gia. Klaus has demonstrated several times throughout the series that he has no regard for his siblings’ partners and will hurt them to maintain his control over his family.

1 Elijah: Conspiring With Damon

Fans are introduced to the rest of the Original family during the third season of The Vampire Diaries. After being undaggered, Elijah seemingly makes peace with Klaus only to conspire with Damon Salvatore and release his neutralized siblings from their slumber.

Elijah instructs the Salvatore brothers to leave as Rebekah, Kol, and Finn descend upon their brother, declaring the situation “family business.” Fortunately for Klaus, they are interrupted by the arrival of their resurrected mother Esther.
