Just days before Google launches the Pixel 6, a new batch of renders have revealed the phone from every angle — and they confirm that its camera bump is massive. Out of all the phones launching this year, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro stand out as two of the most anticipated. They have drastically new designs compared to previous Pixels, are rumored to have massive camera upgrades, and they’ll be the first phones with the Google Tensor chip. For Google and Android fans alike, there’s a lot to look forward to.

Out of all those things, the design has proven to be the most controversial. Ever since the original Pixel launched in 2016, Google’s played it pretty safe with its smartphone design. The company’s dabbled with two-tone aesthetics and fun color options, but it’s never created anything too outlandish. The Pixel 6, however, is an exception to that rule. While it certainly still looks like a smartphone, it’s very clearly different from any Pixel that’s come before it. The biggest reason for this is the camera bump. It’s more towards the phone’s center, takes up an entire section of the backside, and is apparently quite thick.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While the Pixel 6’s design has been shared repeatedly at this point, there haven’t been any renders/photos showing it from the side — at least that was the case until @Evleaks published the renders seen above. What you’re looking at is the left and right frame of the Google Pixel 6. It shows the phone’s aluminum sides, power button, volume rocker, and antenna bands for 5G connectivity. It also offers a side view of the already iconic camera bump. As many people have been worried about for months now, the camera looks to be one of the largest available on a smartphone this year.

Why The Pixel 6 Has Such A Big Camera Bump

While the camera is pretty unsightly from this angle, there’s a very good reason why it looks like this. According to the latest rumors, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will feature the biggest camera upgrades ever for the Pixel series. Both phones are said to have a 50MP primary camera and 12MP ultrawide camera, along with a 48MP telephoto camera exclusively for the Pixel 6 Pro. Google’s relied on its old 12.2MP primary camera for years now, so the jump to 50MP (plus all of the image processing provided by Google Tensor) should allow for some really impressive results.

Also, while the bump is big, it’s far from the only huge camera housing we’ve seen this year. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has a gigantic camera on its backside, as does the iPhone 13 Pro. Big camera bumps are a simple necessity for advancing camera technology. Plus, if it really bothers someone that much, throwing a case on the phone should help the bump mostly disappear.

Giant camera aside, there’s still a lot of excitement for what the Pixel 6 series will bring to the table. They’re the last major smartphone releases expected for 2021, Google’s marketing them like never before, and they’ll be here in just a few short days. Don’t forget to watch Google’s live launch event on October 19, which kicks off at 10:00 AM PT.
