Abe Simpson is one of the funniest characters on The Simpsons. From the premiere to the present, he’s been the hilarious curmudgeon of the Simpsons family, and yet is surprisingly charismatic. No matter the circumstances, one can always count on Abe to have a perspective or an opinion, one that usually comes from his feeling that he’s been left behind, both by his family and the world, in general.

Given how cranky he is, and how easily he fits into the stereotype of the grouchy old man who hates everything about the present, it’s unsurprising that a number of hilarious memes have cropped up that use Abe as their centerpiece.

10 Those Were The Days

Even though he’s a grouch, Abe does seem to enjoy reminding people about previous important events in Springfield. This meme uses an iconic moment from an early season to show what it’s like for people of a certain generation to tell younger people about the file-sharing program known as Limewire.

Given how much internet sharing has changed since the early 2000s, it’s not surprising that people feel old when they talk about it now.

One of the most distressing things about the current pandemic is the constant fighting over whether people should stay inside or not.

There’s quite a bit of shaming going on, and this meme puts its finger squarely on the issue, in which both sides assume a position of moral authority.

8 The Fault In Our Stars

One of the strongest appeals of astrology is that it provides most people with a sense that there is something shaping their destiny, that the bad things that happen to them aren’t always (or even often) their own fault.

This meme cleverly explores this belief by modifying the hilarious news headline in which Abe is seen yelling at the clouds (the hilarity being that there’s no reason given for why he’s doing that. It is Abe Simpson, after all).

7 The Perils Of Age

It’s something of a stereotype that older people are stubborn and unwilling to change, seeing any shift in their behavior to accommodate changing social norms as a threat to their very existence.

While this may be reductive, it is true that as one gets older it becomes harder to keep a finger on the pulse of culture and, and this meme actually uses Abe to make a potent and insightful observation about the perils of growing older in an increasingly face-paced culture.

6 The Wisdom Of Abe

One of the most enduring dichotomies of this series is between Marge’s perennial optimism and Abe’s cynicism. While she always has the ability to look on the bright side of life, Abe seems to always want to be a downer, reminding his family of the darker, more sinister side of life.

Here, this meme brilliantly showcases this, and it makes the point that, sometimes, worrying about life really is a sign that one is more aware of the problems that society faces.

Now, my story begins in 19-dickety-two. We had to say “dickety” cause that Kaiser had stolen our word “twenty.” I chased that rascal to get it back, but gave up after dickety-six miles… #abesimpson #thesimpsons #coronavirus

There’s no question that the pandemic has taken a truly momentous toll on the ways that Americans were used to living their lives. Most people remember those days when it was possible for indoor gatherings of all kinds.

Even though those days weren’t long ago, there’s something about time during a pandemic that makes that period seem impossibly far away, and this meme brilliantly highlights the collective fatigue with the way that this disease has reshaped collective life in the United States and around the world.

4 The Eternal Quandary

A lot of young people are likely to identify with this meme, particularly since there is a strong sense of social isolation and alienation that seems endemic among the younger generations. It’s hard to shake the feeling that, despite there being absolutely no evidence to suggest it, one’s friends are just pretending to be nice.

It’s one of the most paralyzing fears, made all the worse because there’s no way to disprove it. That makes this meme both hilarious and more than a little troubling.

3 The Dreaded Ad

There are few things more irritating than an ad in the middle of a video. In fact, for many people, it’s the ad that keeps them from getting through the video at all, as this meme points out.

Given that so many people clearly tune out of videos after the appearance of that dreaded sign that an ad is supposed to start, one can’t help but wonder why companies continue to put them in.

There’s no question that Henry Cavill is one of the most-loved celebrities right now. He’s not only stunningly handsome, but he also seems to be a genuinely nice guy and a bit of a nerd. Is it any wonder that quite a few guys, both gay and straight, say they have a crush on him.

Any time that Abe tells a story, it’s almost sure to get off the rails pretty quickly (especially if it’s about Homer). Everyone knows about the onion, for example, which seemed to occupy a rather large part in a story that wasn’t really about onions.

As this meme suggests, it’s almost certain that if Abe were to be recounting the history of the pandemic, he’d start getting side-tracked about the idea of having onions on masks (however unpleasant that would actually be).
