Selma Bouvier might not be the most amicable character in The Simpsons, yet she has been married five times, though none of those relationships has lasted for long. Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons made its debut on Fox in 1989, though it had its beginning as a series of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. Since then, The Simpsons has become the longest-running American sitcom and has successfully expanded to other media, most notably film and comic books.

The Simpsons follows the daily adventures of the title family along with those of other notable citizens of Springfield, both friends and enemies of the Simpsons. In over 30 seasons, the series has introduced the families of Homer and Marge, and two characters that appear quite often are Marge’s sisters Patty and Selma. The twins are known for their chain-smoking habit and for not being good at relationships, though they have gone on dates from time to time. Patty came out as a lesbian, while Selma has been married a couple of times, but without much luck.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Selma has been married a total of five times, with her name evolving into Selma Bouvier-Terwilliger-Hutz-McClure-Discothèque-Simpson-D’Amico, though one of those wasn’t a fair marriage. First was Sideshow Bob, whose real name is Robert Terwilliger. Selma and Sideshow Bob met when he was in prison and Selma was his pen-pal. After learning Selma had made “a good fortune” on the stock market, Sideshow Bob tried to kill her, but Bart discovered his plan on time – and that was the end of Selma’s first marriage. Next was her marriage to Lionel Hutz, Springfield’s most incompetent lawyer, though this one happened off-screen, so it’s unknown how they met and how long the relationship lasted, but her third marriage is, perhaps, her most memorable one: Troy McClure.

Selma was a fan of Troy McClure, who he met after giving him an eye test at the Department of Motor Vehicles. However, as McClure’s career started going downhill, he used his relationship with Selma to cover the controversy up. This trick worked and his career was revived, so he was pushed to continue with it and he and Selma got married. Selma later learned their marriage was nothing but a marketing trick, but she went along with it for a bit longer. When McClure suggested they had a child as family men got the best parts in films, she ended their relationship. Her next marriage was to Disco Stu, and it happened off-screen (again). Disco Stu got an annulment from the Pope, putting a definitive end to it. Selma’s weirdest marriage so far was to none other than Grandpa Simpson, who once dated her mother. Selma and Grandpa Simpson realized their relationship was never going to work for different reasons, and so they got a divorce.

Last but not least, the “D’Amico” part in Selma’s long name is thanks to Fit-Fat Tony, the cousin of the original Fat Tony. Selma and Fit-Fat Tony had a wedding, but as she doesn’t speak Italian, she didn’t realize that the ceremony was actually to become Fit-Fat Tony’s mistress, not his wife. Selma’s failed marriages have become a running gag by now, and it’s unlikely that The Simpsons will give her a stable relationship at some point – but it wouldn’t be surprising if she keeps adding last names to her already long name.
