Although The Simpsons Movie hit theaters when the series was long past its prime, the writers brought their A-game to the jam-packed script and managed to filter a steady stream of hysterical gags through an emotionally engaging arc that explores Homer and Marge’s marriage in more depth than the show’s half-hour episodes have time to.

As a result, the movie was praised as a return to form for the once-revered Simpsons brand. While the rumored sequel may never come to fruition, the first movie still holds up today with plenty of hilarious scenes that have stood the test of time.

10 Homer Gets Caught Between A Rock And A Hard Place

The writers of The Simpsons never miss an opportunity for a visual gag. When Homer’s plan to save his family with a wrecking ball backfires as he’s taken out by that very same wrecking ball, he finds himself quite literally caught between a rock and a hard place.

With Homer still stuck to it, the wrecking ball swings back and forth between a giant rock and a bar called “A Hard Place.” When it finally stops swinging, Homer sighs with relief, then it slams him into the rock one last time.

9 Flanders’ Cocoa

Throughout The Simpsons Movie, Bart finds a stabler father figure in Ned Flanders. When Flanders offers Bart a cup of cocoa, he initially rejects the offer, but Flanders makes him a cup anyway and leaves it on the windowsill just in case he wants it.

Flanders makes the most delicious-looking, extravagant cup of cocoa imaginable. He squirts on some whipped cream, adds in a wafer cookie, squirts whipped cream on the cookie, plants a marshmallow in the cream, toasts the marshmallow with a butane torch, and grates some chocolate on top. Naturally, Bart can’t resist.

The shot fades to black and a caption reads, “To be continued…” Then, another caption reads, “Immediately,” and the movie picks up where it left off. Some viewers were actually fooled by this gag in the movie’s initial theatrical run.

7 “I Can’t. I Simply Can’t.”

When the pollution in Lake Springfield reaches toxic levels, the city agrees to put up a barrier around the lake to prevent people from dumping in it. Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel is brought in to test the effectiveness of the barrier.

Mayor Quimby tells him to try dumping some waste in the lake and he just bumps into the waist-height barrier a couple of times and concludes, “I can’t. I simply can’t.”

6 Homer & The Dog Sled

After Homer’s epiphany, he decides to travel back to Springfield via dog sled. He’s shown whipping his dogs as they pull him across the snow — “Mush! Mush! Mush!” — but he also whips them when they’re doing everything else.

He whips the dogs when they’re asleep — “Rest! Rest! Rest!” — so it’s hardly surprising when they attack him and leave him for dead.

5 Mr. Burns Releases The Hounds

When Apu and a couple of others go over to Mr. Burns’ mansion to ask him to share some of his power with the town, he asks them to give him a good reason why he should help them out instead of just releasing the hounds.

Apu unwisely appeals to Burns’ humanity: “Look in your heart and you will find the answer.” Cut to: Mr. Burns has released the hounds and Apu and the others are desperately fleeing from his house.

4 Russ Cargill Goes Mad With Power

After the Simpsons escape from the dome, Russ Cargill tells one of his EPA underlings, “I want 10,000 tough guys, and I want 10,000 soft guys to make the tough guys look tougher. And here’s how I want them arranged: tough, tough, soft, tough, soft, soft, tough…”

The EPA underling says, “Sir, I’m afraid you’ve gone mad with power,” and Albert Brooks nails the delivery of Cargill’s retort: “Of course I have! You ever tried going mad without power? It’s boring! No one listens to you!”

3 An Angry Mob Swarms The Simpson House

When Kent Brockman reveals that the reason Springfield was encased in a dome was because Homer dumped in the lake, an angry mob swarms the Simpson house. Marge tells him to go outside and apologize and he says, “I would, but I’m afraid that if I open the door, they’ll take all of you!” But the angry mob shouts through, “No, we won’t, we just want Homer!”

Maggie helps the family escape through a sinkhole in her sandbox that leads outside the dome. Homer gives the mob the middle finger as he goes down, but he gets stuck. Moe cries out, “The top of his head is still showing. Claw at it!”

2 Bart Skates To Krusty Burger Naked

The animators of The Simpsons Movie got creative when Homer dares Bart to skate to Krusty Burger naked and he goes through with it. After an extended sequence in which Bart’s crotch is covered up by everything from a sprinkler to Agnes Skinner’s finger (“Don’t look where I’m pointing!”), he rides past a giant shrub that covers everything except his crotch.

In the censored cut of the movie, Bart’s genitalia is covered by a black box that reads, “European Version Only.”

1 Homer & Bart Dispose Of The Bomb

After letting Bart down time and time again throughout the movie, Homer lets him sit on the back of his motorcycle and hold the bomb when he scales the side of the dome to save the town.

In the midst of a heartfelt moment between Homer and Bart, Marge unexpectedly interrupts them to say, “Somebody throw the g*ddamn bomb!” After Bart throws it, the town sighs with relief. Then, the bomb bounces around the hole and they all hang in suspense. Thankfully, it detonates before it falls back through the hole.
