One of the new features of The Sims 4: Paranormal Stuff Pack is a new career that works as an offshoot of the Freelancer career. In The Sims 4, players can select from a variety of careers for their Sim. Sims can go to work, decide how to perform in an average day, and get promoted over time. The base game comes with a few career options, and many of the DLC Expansion and Game Packs introduce others. Typical careers in the Sims universe are Rabbit Holes, where players send the Sim to work in the morning and cannot control much about their daily responsibilities apart from how hard they work or when they choose to take a break and socialize. The Sims 4: Get To Work Expansion Pack introduced the concept of Active Careers, or careers players could participate in with their Sim. Since that Expansion, several more active careers have been added, including Actor, Conservationist, and most of the options in the Freelancer career path.

The Sims 4: Paranormal Stuff is the first of the smaller content expansions to introduce a new career, and it adds a new active career option for players who want to make their Sims experts in the occult and paranormal activity. Sims can now become Freelance Paranormal Investigators. As a Paranormal Investigator, Sims will be called upon to enter a haunted house and commune with the deceased. They may need to clean out accursed objects or appease the spirits. Some fans report struggling to find and get started in this career. For those players interested in exploring haunted houses full time, here’s how to get Sims involved in the Freelance Paranormal Investigator career for The Sims 4: Paranormal Stuff.

How to Get Started in the Paranormal Investigator Career in The Sims 4

The Paranormal Investigator career in The Sims 4 is a Freelance career, meaning Sims can work whenever they feel like it and select gigs to complete when they have time. Instead of receiving a daily pay as they would in other traditional careers, they only receive their Simoleons when the work has been completed.

Sims can join a career from an interaction on their cell phone or computer. They will need to join the Freelancer career. They will be prompted to pick an agency to work with, defining what sort of Freelance work they intend to complete (writing, art, fabricating, etc.), but they will notice that the option to join the Paranormal Investigator agency, the Federal Bureau of Spooky Investigation, is greyed out. Players will not be able to join the agency until they have a Paranormal Investigator license.

There are two ways to pick up one of these licenses. The first, and likely easiest, is by entering a haunted house and talking to Guidry. The new Haunted House lot that comes with the pack is called the Duplantier Dwelling, named after Guidry’s family. Players can move their Sim’s household into this lot, or they can change another lot to the Haunted House Residential (Gallery) lot type and move their Sim in there. Guidry should appear on his own after 9 p.m. in-game time on the second day after a household moves into a home on a Haunted House lot.

If players prefer not to live in a Haunted House, their Sim can still summon Guidry with the help of a Séance Table. The catch is that they will need to increase their Medium skill level first.

To get a Paranormal Investigator License from Guidry, Sims need to reach level 5 in the Medium skill from performing interactions at the Séance Table. After that, they can speak with Guidry and tell him they want to become a Paranormal Investigator, which is incidentally his chosen vocation when he was alive. He will grant them a license, and the player can return to the Freelance career menu to join the Federal Bureau of Spooky Investigation.

If players do not want to go through this entire process, and they happen to have many Satisfaction Points to spare, they can purchase the license instead. It will cost them 3,000 Satisfaction Points at the Rewards Store.

When players are ready to start working, they will need to check for gigs. They can do this under the Work tab on their phone or in the Career tab in their Simology panel. Sims can choose from a Beginner Paranormal Investigation, which has lower pay but Friendly spirits, an Adept Paranormal Investigation, which has a middle-of-the-road base pay and Mysterious spirits, or an Expert Paranormal Investigation, which pays well but Evil spirits, including the possibility of encountering Temperance. When players know which they want, they can click on it to add it to their Career panel. They can have only one active gig at a time.

After that point, it is up to the player to get to the gig. All gigs start at 9:30 p.m. Players will need to fill up the Investigation meter in the top left by performing the actions listed. These can include cleaning up spills or removing accursed objects, appeasing the specters with gifts, or performing ceremonies at a séance circle. They have until 6:30 a.m. to complete the job and receive their pay.

The Sims 4 is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
