Netflix recently canceled The Society after only one season, despite being just weeks away from beginning production on the second installment. The genre-bending series takes place in West Ham, New England, where the students are left stranded after all of the other residents disappear.

Left without adults, Internet, new supplies, or a way out, the teens establish a new society of their own. With a narrator as wise, witty, and omniscient as Becca, along with some young philosophers like Grizz, the series is pretty quotable. Now that the show is over, here’s a look back at ten of the most memorable quotes from the series.

10 “Sometimes I Wonder If There’s Another Version Of This World Where We’re Friends.”

In the final episode of the season, Allie and Harry meet to discuss the upcoming elections. Little does Allie know that Harry is about to abolish them and kidnap her and Will, as per Campbell’s instructions.

Allie attempts to be civil with him so they may agree on terms for their campaigns, but the conversation drifts away from the topic. They reflect on the way their relationship has evolved throughout the series, from Harry’s hatred of Cassandra to his strange flirtation with both sisters, then his refusal to cooperate with Allie and even turning against her.

9 “That’s Delicious. Good God. That’s, Like, Really F***ing Good.”

After Harry’s decline into depression – caused partly by Campbell, by the way – Kelly endeavors to visit him regularly, despite his previous actions against her. One day, she routinely brings him a sandwich, and who should be there but Campbell?

Campbell has had Harry in his clutches for quite some time at this point, and Kelly doesn’t trust him. He takes the sandwich and slowly unwraps it while they discuss their misgivings about each other, but Campbell pauses after taking a bite. In a hilarious moment, he grins with his mouth full and, amazed, compliments her sandwich while she stares him down, unimpressed.

8 “How Do You Say ‘Kiss Me’?”

Grizz and Sam spend the day together while everyone else is at the Thanksgiving dinner. They get to know each other through some emotional dialogue, made all the more meaningful as Grizz tries to learn sign language to better communicate with Sam.

Finally, they end up in Sam’s room, talking about their childhoods. Sam tells Grizz that he doesn’t even know what his own voice sounds like and that he wishes he could hear Grizz’s. Grizz asks if he can teach him one more thing in sign language: “How do you say ‘kiss me’?” In response, Sam kisses him.

7 “How Do They Find Each Other?”

Sam and Becca are cleaning up the church after another night of partying, but Sam has a lot on his mind. He starts confessing that he’s worried about his future in this new life.

He says that there are probably other gay people in New Ham, probably “gay and repressed”, and nobody that he’d want. “That’s the real thing,” he says. “Finding someone who loves you, who you love back. And that’s crazy. Even outside of here it would be crazy. The fact that other people can do that … how do they find each other?”

6 “Who Am I In This Story?”

In the first episode, a lot of the kids become very selfish. The supermarket is pretty much a free-for-all, and Allie watches on, disappointed in her classmates. Elle won’t let anyone take anything from her trolley, even though she has far, far more than she needs.

Allie approaches her and tells her about The Poseidon Adventure. She starts rattling off the character tropes typical of adventure/disaster films, wondering which one she would be. (The one who turns out to be weaker than expected, the heroine, et cetera.) Moved and shaken by this speech, Elle returns some of her items.

5 “You Couldn’t Do It. I Could.”

Grizz is the only person Allie is willing to speak to after Dewey’s execution. He feels ashamed that he was unable to go through with it, but Allie asks, “What does that say about me, then?”

With tears in her eyes, she continues, “You couldn’t do it. I could.” The only was Grizz can respond is by putting his head on her shoulder.

4 “Like I Was A F***ing God Or Something.”

Since Grizz is unable to shoot the gun, Allie takes his place. Jason and Luke are also there so that none of them will know for sure whose gun will fire the killing shot, but Allie knows it’s hers as the bullet fires.

Of course, all three of them believe it’s theirs. Later that night, Jason confesses to his girlfriend that he thinks it was his. He describes how powerful he felt as the gun kicked back, like a rush going through him. “Like a f***ing god or something,” he finally decides, giving the episode its title.

3 “Guns Don’t Keep People Safe. They Get People Killed.”

To everyone’s surprise, Helena is hoarding guns – a lot of them. She tells Allie that she won’t return them, even after Cassandra’s murder. Helena questions why Allie should be the one to control who protects themselves and how.

Allie tries to remind Helena why they’re confiscating the guns. “Guns don’t keep people safe. They get people killed.” But Helena is adamant. In the end, instead of destroying the guns, she manages to get ahold of, Allie decides to keep them.

2 “We’re Living In Some Sort Of Black Hole Anti-universe.”

Grizz is always something funny or wise, or both, even on the morning of the pre-dawn raid – or what ends up being “post-dawn” since Grizz has slept through his alarm.

Jason, Clark, and Luke get annoyed with him. They start arguing about what it is they’re doing, and Jason asks who should say the Miranda warning. Grizz turns on him: “We’re living in some sort of black hole anti-universe, I really don’t think the Miranda warning-” But he’s interrupted by a very irritated Luke. They storm the house in what is easily the funniest scene of the show.

1 “You’ve Been Weighed In The Balance And Found Wanting.”

In the first episode, before West Ham becomes New Ham, the boys notice writing on the wall. Grizz says it’s the writing on the wall, but he’s not being funny.

It’s from the Book of Daniel and it translates to “You’ve been weighed in the balance and found wanting.” The same day, the world is turned upside down, and the writing vanishes. Later, Grizz tells Allie, who repeats these words in wonder, each time sending a chill down everyone’s spines. The words are symbolic and represent the themes of the show in an appropriately haunting way.
