Who Peter Capaldi is playing in The Suicide Squad has been confirmed. James Gunn assembled a huge cast of characters for his first DC Extended Universe movie. There are holdovers from 2016’s Suicide Squad like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, but otherwise the majority of the cast is new. Idris Elba and John Cena have headlined the new additions, but the collection of talent also includes Taika Waititi, David Dastmalchian, Michael Rooker, Alice Braga, Storm Reid, and former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi.

The addition of Capaldi was an exciting one for Whovians and DC fans, but figuring out who he was going to play has been a challenge. Gunn and Capaldi never confirmed the identity of his The Suicide Squad character, although Capaldi did offer up some teases. The actor revealed he shaved his head to play a character who was completely bald, which left fans to theorize what DC Comics character he could be. After all of the speculation, his role has finally been confirmed.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As part of DC’s online convention DC FanDome, Gunn hosted a panel for The Suicide Squad and was joined by the giant ensemble, Capaldi included. During the panel, it was officially announced that Capaldi is playing the DC villain known as The Thinker. He is a frequent member of Task Force X in the comics who is a super inventor that gained telekinetic and mind control powers.

The original version of The Thinker was created in DC Comics all the way back in 1943 as a Flash villain. Clifford DeVoe was a member of the Injustice Society before joining the Suicide Squad, with the title then being passed down Cliff Carmichael, and then Des Connor before becoming an A.I. While comic readers are well-aware of who The Thinker is, the character recently made his live-action debut during The Flash in season 4.

With The Thinker’s presence in The Suicide Squad now confirmed, fans are already excited by the prospect of what Capaldi will bring to the character. Even though there’s only been a few small looks at him in the movie, The Thinker will be part of Task Force X. There’s even a possibility that Capaldi could have a role in the DCEU beyond The Suicide Squad too, but that will require him to survive his debut, which is far from a guarantee given the team’s premise. Given The Thinker’s familiarity with The Flash, perhaps he could even return in the upcoming solo movie or a potential sequel.
