James Gunn’s first DC movie, The Suicide Squad, gets 12 new character posters for the main cast, including Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, and Peacemaker. Gunn, hired to helm the sequel/reboot after being fired by Disney from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (a movie he was later rehired for), finally released the first red band, The Suicide Squad trailer revealing the DC villain Starro and the entire team on Friday. As expected, the new footage teases a comedic, anarchic, and violent superhero movie that defies simple categorization.

The long-awaited movie hopes to rectify David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad mistakes, which suffered from studio interference and landed up being an underwhelming and tonally inconsistent critical failure as a result. Warner Bros. seems to have learned its lesson for this movie, allowing Gunn complete creative control, unleashing him on their back catalog of characters. As a result, The Suicide Squad features an eclectic mix of characters from the 2016 version, including Rick Flag, Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, and Captain Boomerang, joining the likes of Peacemaker, Polka-Dot Man, and Bloodsport, a character Gunn wrote for Idris Elba. The movie features no less than 17 Task Force X characters.

To coincide with the first trailer’s release, WB dropped brand new character posters for 12 of those characters. The colorful new character posters all feature the stars in costume, with something related to their characters exploding out from behind them. There are posters for Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, Amanda Waller, Captain Boomerang, Polka-Dot Man, Rick Flag, King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, Thinker, and Weasel. Weasel’s is perhaps the funniest, with a bunch of kibble exploding out from behind him. You can see all 12 posters below:

Given there are so many characters in The Suicide Squad, it’s understandable that some don’t get their own posters. But this is also perhaps a sign of which characters play a more prominent role in the movie than others. Characters left out of the poster mix include Blackguard, T.D.K, and Javelin, and the assumption then is that they perish fairly early. Of course, there’s also every chance that WB and Gunn know audiences will assume this, and those characters could end up being the ones who survive to the end. As the posters all say, “don’t get too attached.”

With the first trailer finally out there, and these new character posters getting released, anticipation for The Suicide Squad is increasing among audiences. Especially since everything released in the past two days, including a Dirty Dozen-inspired poster, hints that the movie will be a wild and explosive 1970s-style action movie. The Suicide Squad releases in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6.
