The Suicide Squad star Steve Agee reveals that he would return as King Shark in a James Gunn spinoff if asked. Released last summer, Gunn’s The Suicide Squad fared generally well with critics but ultimately pulled in underwhelming box office numbers. The film introduced audiences to a motley crew of lovable misfits, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, who are recruited to carry out a suicidal mission in exchange for shorter prison sentences.

One standout from the titular Suicide Squad was King Shark, a literal great white with a penchant for eating people. While Sylvester Stallone provided the voice for the giant man-eating creature, it was comedian Steve Agee who did the motion capture for the character on-set. Agee was, of course, pulling double duty on-set of The Suicide Squad and also played John Economos, a member of the ARGUS task force and aide to Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Although The Suicide Squad sees the deaths of a number of main characters, King Shark, much to the relief of many fans, lives to fight another day.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Agee reveals that he would happily don the motion capture suit once more if Gunn ever decided to feature King Shark in a spinoff movie or series. Agee explains that providing motion capture for King Shark allowed him to work with a number of great actors and that his on-set experience was “a blast.” Check out Agee’s full comment below when asked if he’d be interested in returning as the character:

“I would be willing to. I had a really good time playing King Shark. It afforded me the opportunity to work with amazing people like Idris [Elba], Margot [Robbie] and Joel Kinnaman. Had I just been doing Economos, that wouldn’t have been the case. So it was awesome. It was a blast. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

With Gunn’s HBO Max Peacemaker series currently a major hit with audiences and critics, it’s entirely possible that the writer/director will want to more fully explore other characters from The Suicide Squad as well in other spin-off series. If Gunn ever came to him with a series idea for King Shark, Agee certainly seems up for reprising his role, saying “I’m in. 100%.” Of course, Agee also appears in Peacemaker as Economos, and, with Peacemaker season 2 not off the table, it’s likely that, even if a King Shark spinoff doesn’t happen, his work with Gunn isn’t over just yet.

While David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad failed to deliver on many fronts, Gunn’s reboot of the material did provide a genuinely interesting and compelling cast of anti-heroes. A number of the characters introduced in the series are ripe for their very own spinoff series and King Shark is definitely one of them. With the character of King Shark not able to emote or communicate as fully as his human counterparts, however, any spinoff would likely also need to feature a human co-star. Considering her ability to communicate with rats and the unique bond she forms with King Shark by the end of The Suicide Squad, Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2 seems like a strong pick for a co-lead.
