So it turns out that The Suicide Squad Weasel takes some inspiration from Bloom County‘s Bill The Cat. Over the last week, The Suicide Squad‘s writer-director James Gunn unveiled two trailers for the film, and both have gotten a lot of attention. The trailers feature fresh glimpses of the characters, which are from the DC Comics Suicide Squad series.

When asked about whether The Suicide Squad is neither a sequel nor a reboot of 2016’s David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad, Gunn has said that his film is “it’s own thing.” In late 2018, Gunn was hired to write and direct the new Suicide Squad film after the first released to massive box office success but mixed reviews. Four of the Suicide Squad cast members returned to their roles for the new movie, but the rest of Task Force X has been recast. The film is set to be released this August, and soon audiences get a look at the completed project. Now, they also have some insight into the design for one of the characters.

Gunn unleashed the second trailer for The Suicide Squad, and while talking to fans on Twitter, he revealed the inspiration for Weasel’s look in the film. In response to a fan who posted an image of what they thought was the inspiration for the character, Gunn replied with Bill The Cat’s image. Bill is a character from the Bloom County comic strip that was introduced in 1982.

The introduction of Weasel, who is played by Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn, is just one of the differences between Ayer’s Suicide Squad and the Gunn-directed one that’s set to be released this year. One change is the Task Force X members. While Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) all returned to their roles, Deadshot (Will Smith) and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) don’t appear in this version. Idris Elba was initially cast to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, but by the time the film got rolling, he was revealed to play Bloodsport. John Cena, one of several new members of the cast, is joint the film as Peacemaker.

In the hands of Gunn, it wouldn’t be surprising to see The Suicide Squad further differentiate itself from Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Gunn’s major foray into the world of comic book movies unfolded when he was tapped to direct Guardians of The Galaxy, a Marvel Cinematic Universe film that was released in 2014. With a general lightheartedness and a sharp sense of humor, that flick was pretty much the antithesis of the sorts of serious films that were first released as part of the DCEU. Fans can see Gunn’s vision come to life once again when The Suicide Squad hits HBO Max on Aug. 6.
