WARNING: Spoilers for The Third Day ahead

The Third Day season 1 on HBO is an excellent dark drama with a less than conclusive ending, but will there be a season 2? The Third Day season 1 was split into three parts that included two sections of three episodes each with a 12-hour livestream event in between. The series features the island of Osea, where a small village of people still practice ancient Celtic rituals, including an annual festival to the deity Esus.

Part One, “Summer”, of The Third Day is centered around Sam (Jude Law) as he discovers he has a mysterious connection to the island of Osea. Part Two, “Autumn”, shows the day of the festival, shot in one 12-hour take over the course of a day on Osea, during which Sam is put through several physically grueling trials and becomes the official Father—or leader—of the island. Part Three, “Winter”, involves Helen (Naomie Harris), Sam’s wife, and her two daughters, Ellie and Talulah, coming to Osea on holiday, where they soon discover that things are very strange on the island.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Given The Third Day’s story arc and its unconventional presentation, it’s unlikely there will be a season 2. The show is billed as a limited series, which means it was never meant to return for more episodes. However, never say never, as HBO has green-lit additional seasons for limited series before, including Big Little Lies, which was only meant to air for one season, but was popular enough to get a season 2 anyway.

The Third Day Season 2 Release Date Info

At this time, HBO has no plans to give the green light to The Third Day season 2. The Third Day was always marketed as a limited series, which may be why it was able to get Jude Law and Naomie Harris attached to the project in the first place. Both are high caliber, veteran actors who might otherwise have been unlikely to commit to multiple seasons of a TV show.

The Third Day Season 2 Story Details

The Third Day was co-created by Felix Barrett, who is the head of the theater troupe, Punchdrunk. As Barrett’s main interest is theater, it’s unlikely he’d sign up to helm another TV show, especially as theaters around the country begin to open up following the COVID-19 pandemic. Even so, it’s possible that Barrett and other associated cast and crew could be attached to The Third Day season 2 if there was a strong enough offer from HBO. Returning cast could include Law and Harris, but the show also might be able to move forward without them. The Third Day season 2 could further explore the history and rich lore of the mysterious Osea Island, which set up intriguing and unique folk horror elements familiar to fans of movies like Midsommar and The Wicker Man.
