Chris Pratt is back in his latest role as an action star. This time, he travels to the future to take on an alien invasion in the Amazon Prime original sci-fi thriller The Tomorrow War. Pratt stars as Daniel Forester, a biology teacher and former soldier who served in the Iraqi War.

Forester has a wife and young daughter, and while he has designs on furthering his career, things take a turn for the worse when a group of fighters from the future appear to prepare for a battle. The Tomorrow War is loaded with special effects and a few twists and turns that viewers may not have seen coming but on top of all of this, the movie boasts a colorful cast of characters, some of whom steal the show.

10 Emmy Forester

A loving wife and mother, Emmy also works as a therapist for draftees who have returned from the future. Most of these soldiers suffered severe injuries or lost limbs.

Emmy is a strong female presence in the movie and must act as the rock for her daughter as Dan is drafted and prepares to make the trip to the future to face an unknown enemy. Still, not all that much is known about this character and a potential sequel will hopefully add some depth and screen time for this important character.

9 Martin

Among the students in Dan Forester’s biology class is a boy named Martin. Young Martin takes any chance he can get to introduce the topic of volcanos into the classroom discussion, much to the chagrin of his teacher and fellow classmates.

In the end, though, it’s Martin’s vast knowledge of volcanos that leads Dan and the others to discover the location of the alien ship. Without Martin’s impute, the world as the characters know it would be doomed to suffer an invasion of some rather nasty aliens.

8 Lieutenant Hart

As soccer fans from around the world watch the World Cup, a portal from the future opens up and soldiers appear on the field, desperate and looking for help against vicious creatures they call “White Spikes.”

The leader of this group is Lt. Hart. Hart is a no-nonsense fighter who doesn’t mince words. She knows what the world will face and, though she’s fought the attackers, describing what they look like would only cause potential soldiers to avoid being drafted at all cost.

7 Norah

Though her role in the fight is short, Norah adds a bit of comedy relief before taking a courageous stand against the White Spikes.

Norah first appears alongside Dan with the other recruits and, though she’s nervous and clearly shaken by what she sees once the team arrives in the future, in the end, she comes through as she sacrifices herself against the vicious creature bearing down on her so others can go on to survive.

6 Cowan

Among the group of people drafted to fight for the survival of the future Earth is Cowan, a man whose nervousness comes through almost as soon as he appears onscreen.

A big man with a beard and heart, Cowan is the first on the team to spot one of the nasty creatures they’ve been sent to fight. Though initially frightened, Cowan soon finds his courage and stands against the attackers in order to allow others to escape, sacrificing himself alongside Norah in a show of bravery.

5 Dan Forester

A former Green Berret who had seen battle in Iraq, Daniel Forester is now a biology teacher with a wife and daughter, who is intent on using his knowledge in the field to move further in his career. This quest comes to an abrupt end when Dan is drafted for the war effort.

Outfitted and sent to the future, Dan quickly takes command of the situation and leads the group to safety, despite suffering serious casualties. When Dan learns the truth about his life and how things end, he’s determined to change not only the course of that life but the world’s fate as well, which is just what you want from a protagonist.

4 Dorian

Now on his third tour to the future to face off against the White Spikes, Dorian is a soldier who has learned he’s dying of cancer and plunges headfirst into the fight.

Though Dorian seems rigid and aggressive toward his fellow draftees, he soon proves to be a skilled combatant and trusted ally. When he confesses his illness to Dan, he suddenly seems far more vulnerable than his rough exterior lets on.

3 Muri Forester

Smart as a whip when she was a young girl, Dan discovers his daughter becomes a brilliant scientist in the future. Though he’s proud of Muri, she soon reveals to him his own awful future in a heartbreaking confession after narrowly escaping an attack from the White Spikes.

After experimenting on the alien queen, Muri develops a weapon that can wipe out the White Spikes before they attack. Her only hope is to send it back through time with her father in the hopes it can be duplicated and used against the nightmarish creatures.

2 Charlie

Like many would do if thrown into a war against massive, killer aliens, Charlie did the sensible thing and hid until he was brought back to his own time. In the end, though, it’s Charlie who teams up with Dan to figure out the secret to defeating the White Spikes.

Not only that, they find out just where the attack would come from and it was nothing like what the future fighters believed. Charlie is funny at times, clearly the type to use humor as a coping mechanism, yet at other times he seems sad. This makes him relatable and by the end of the movie, he becomes one of the most interesting characters.

1 James Forester

An old soldier with a haunted past, James Forester is Dan’s father and a military fanatic with a large collection of weapons and gear. Though James’ abandonment of his family has caused clear friction between father and son, it’s soon revealed James’ uncontrollable anger issues forced him out the door, mainly to protect his wife and child from his own damaged psyche.

James Forester is one of the deepest characters in the film and steals every scene he’s in. Perhaps a sequel will give fans a deeper look at the tough-as-nails veteran.
