Viewers have mixed opinions about Elena Gilbert, and she’s not the most popular character in The Vampire Diaries. She is the protagonist of the supernatural drama, so it makes sense that she was so heavily featured in the series. Since Elena is at the center of everything, both good and bad, it’s not surprising that she’s one of the TVD heroes fans hated.

Viewers probably know more about Elena than anyone on the series, given that there are decades of the Salvatores’ lives that are still left unaccounted for. However, there are still some things about Elena Gilbert that only die-hard fans are aware of.

10 Jeremy Is Her Biological Cousin

Because Elena and Jeremy are siblings in every way that matters, it’s easy to forget that they don’t share the same parents. She’s the daughter of Isobel Flemming, Alaric’s ex-wife, and John Gilbert, her adopted father’s brother.

Elena and Jeremy are still blood-related, which is why Bonnie was able to use a locater spell on Jeremy to find Elena. But Grayson and Miranda are Elena’s uncle and aunt, while they’re Jeremy’s biological parents. The Gilbert family tree isn’t always easy to follow.

9 She Changed Her Last Name To Salvatore

When Klaus goes to Mystic Falls to seek help from Caroline in The Originals Season 5, an Easter egg reveals that Elena has taken Damon’s last name. Although a wedding between them was never shown, viewers get a glimpse of her wedding ring in The Vampire Diaries series finale.

The sign also tells fans that Elena did finish medical school and is currently a doctor, as the window of her medical practice reads, “Elena Salvatore, M.D.”

8 She Dated Matt Longer Than Stefan

Stefan and Elena had such an intense relationship that it comes as a shock that Elena dated him for less time than Matt. Matt and Elena first kiss during Freshman year and break up around the end of their Sophomore year.

Stefan and Elena dated during their junior year but broke up multiple times. They weren’t together during the summer, as Stefan left Mystic Falls, and they only got back together for a handful of episodes during The Vampire Diaries Season 4. It felt like a long time, but Stefan and Elena probably only dated for around 10 months, possibly less.

7 She Died Four Times

Out of everyone in the series, Elena has probably died the most. It’s a bit ironic given all the times the characters had to sacrifice for Elena in The Vampire Diaries.

First, she was drained of blood for Klaus’s ritual but was resurrected when John Gilbert traded his life for her’s. Then Elena drowned and came back as a vampire in the finale of the third season, was killed in an explosion to go to the Other Side, and lived out a long life as a human before dying and finding peace.

6 She Can’t Cook

Elena mentions that she can’t cook during the beginning of the series, which is why Stefan made dinner whenever they ate in. She tells Stefan that her mother also couldn’t cook, and her father would make dinner just like Stefan does for her.

Elena is seen making chili for a party at the Lockwood mansion, but Damon is convinced that it won’t turn out well. Whether or not his doubt was related to her lack of cooking skills is unknown.

5 She Has Children With Damon

The Vampire Diaries universe loves to pay tribute to its prior shows, and Legacies revealed that Klaus and Caroline, whose relationship evolved a lot over time, were married in an alternate universe. It makes sense that the show references Klaroline, as Klaus is the father of Hope, and Caroline is the mother of the twins, but they also mention other original characters.

Damon and Elena end up having multiple kids, but their first is a girl named Stefanie Salvatore. Unsurprisingly, they chose to name their daughter after Stefan who died in The Vampire Diaries series finale.

4 She’s A Cancer

Elena’s birthday is June 22, which makes Cancer her astrological sign. Damon and Caroline threw Elena a party for her 18th birthday at the Salvatore boarding house in The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 1, “The Birthday,” which tells viewers the exact day that the premiere takes place.

Elena doesn’t have another birthday onscreen, but she is turned into a vampire and frozen at 18, before taking the cure and becoming human again.

3 She’s The Last Petrova Doppelgänger

Although she and Damon’s children will continue the Petrova and Salvatore bloodline, Petrova doppelgängers will go extinct after Elena. There were seven doppelgängers that appeared onscreen in The Vampire Diaries, but Elena is the only one still alive in the series finale of the show.

The final episode confirms that Elena dies after a long and happy life with Damon, so while the doppelgängers are not yet extinct in the TVDU, the flash-forward reveals that they will be in a few decades.

2 She Wanted To Be A Writer

The show is called The Vampire Diaries, so it’s only fitting that the protagonist would keep some kind of journal throughout. However, she’s not seen writing very often in the later seasons, and it’s unclear whether she took large breaks from the hobby or was simply writing offscreen.

Elena admits that she wanted to be a writer because it was something that she and her mother did together. But after Miranda’s death, Elena decides not to pursue a writing career.

1 She Was Supposed To End Up With Stefan

Damon and Elena’s epic love story came to an end when they took the cure and lived happily ever after. But there were fans who still believed Elena and Stefan were soulmates in The Vampire Diaries, and they weren’t necessarily wrong.

In an interview with Deadlineshowrunner, Kevin Williamson revealed that he had always wanted Stefan and Elena to end up together. They were the anchor of the show, but since Nina Dobrev left after the sixth season, they were unable to follow through with their original plan.
