The Vampire Diaries: 10 Things About Werewolves That Still Don’t Make Sense

The shared universe of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies is filled with all sorts of mystical creatures. But one of the most important and narratively relevant species in this universe is undoubtedly the werewolves.

Although even the other supernatural creatures in The Vampire Diaries believed that werewolves were just a myth at the start, by the conclusion of the series their existence and the werewolf characters had irrevocably changed the course of the story. However, just because they got a lot of attention, that doesn’t mean that everything about them was clear and explained. So what about werewolves still don’t make sense?

10 The Bloodlines Have Different Powers

This seems like it may be a plot hole for The Vampire Diaries or it’s possible that it was just information that none of the TVD werewolves actually had, but what’s odd is that on The Originals it’s made clear that each werewolf bloodline has different superpowers.

This is strange firstly because why would the Hollow’s curse give each werewolf bloodline a different power, but it’s also confusing because the werewolves on TVD seem to be similarly matched in all supernatural abilities.

9 They Don’t Suppress The Turn With Magic

Once again, this is a concept that was introduced on to The Originals at a later time, but the very fact that werewolves can use “moonlight rings” much in the way that vampires use daylight rings to protect them from the sun is hard to understand.

Or rather, it’s hard to understand why, if it’s that easy to suppress the turn with some kind of magic, why almost no werewolves actually do that.

8 Their Bites Are Toxic To Vampires

Although vampires are more powerful than werewolves in almost every way, one specific huge weakness that they have when it comes to werewolves is that werewolf bites are deadly for vampires. But that also doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

After all, werewolves predate the existence of vampires, and the whole point of Esther making her family vampires in the first place was to protect them from werewolves. So how exactly did this bite issue come to be?

7 They’re All Killers

To be fair, it’s not entirely unheard of to kill someone or to accidentally cause someone else’s death. However, given how rare werewolves are supposed to be, it’s pretty surprising that so many people (so many teenagers and young people in particular) have already killed someone and triggered the curse.

Perhaps the werewolf gene is far more common than it seems, but the rarity of the gene as well as how many people have triggered it doesn’t really add up.

6 Their Population Is All Over The Place

So when Klaus was initially supposed to be trying to create his hybrid army, werewolves were extremely hard to find, even for a supernatural expert with amazing connections like Klaus.

However, once he shows up in New Orleans, there is apparently a veritable legion of werewolves. So which one is it, are they extremely rare, or are they everywhere?

5 They’re Supposedly Hard To Find

Once again, Klaus was basically the de facto king of the supernatural world. He was legendary, terrifying, and had enormous power and connections among all supernatural creatures. And when he was trying to make his hybrids, it took months of searching to find just one pack of werewolves.

So he apparently just never thought to check around New Orleans, where there are dozens of turned werewolves who are in an extremely conspicuous war with other supes?

4 They Have Instinctive Animosity Towards Vampires

Given the genesis of vampires, it would make sense if the reverse of this was true, as they were created as a form of protection against werewolves. But it’s odd that werewolves seem to have some natural instinct to attack vampires.

Their rivalry would make sense logically, but the fact that there literally seems to be something inborn in werewolves that aggressive towards vampires is confusing given that vampires didn’t exist when the werewolf curse was created.

3 So Many Werewolf Families Are Unaware That They Have The Gene

While causing death is not something that anyone ever wants to go through, it is quite strange that so many people who have the werewolf gene are completely unaware of it until they actually trigger it.

Killing someone isn’t outrageously unusual when it comes to an entire family tree, so why didn’t anyone who triggered the gene leave a warning behind for their future family members?

2 Becoming A Werewolf Makes Them More Powerful

The curse element of the werewolf gene does make sense. The Hollow wanted to punish those who harmed her, so she cursed them with an incredibly painful transformation into a wolf.

However, the werewolf curse was designed to be just that, a curse. So then, why would this curse actually make those who have been cursed by it stronger, faster, and more powerful?

1 No One Has Tried To Break The Curse

Like vampires, werewolves are presumably an abomination in the eyes of nature. And like vampires, werewolves were created through magic, and thus should be able to be un-created.

While Esther’s quest to undo the spell she put on her family and erase vampires from the world failed, it’s really odd that no witch in the history of werewolf existence has actually tried to undo the curse that the Hollow created.
