The vampires in The Vampire Diaries have several magical powers that set them apart from their counterparts in TV shows such as Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. One of these powers is the ability to turn off their humanity, leaving them emotionless, ruthless and extremely dangerous.

Caroline Forbes turns off her humanity in season six after the death of her mother Liz and Elena Gilbert flips her humanity switch in season four after losing Jeremy. Both vampires proved that, despite being good people, they are devastating when they don’t feel anything. Here are the five best no-humanity Caroline moments and the five best no-humanity Elena moments.

10 Caroline: Telling Elena The Cold Truth

Caroline without her humanity had no qualms about telling Elena exactly what she thought about her. She calls out her friend’s hypocrisy when Elena, who turned her humanity off to cope with losing Jeremy, tells her how to handle her grief after Caroline’s mother Liz dies of cancer.

Elena has a knack for making nearly every situation about herself, to Caroline’s amusement. The humanity-less vampire tells her friend “I compelled a student to perform surgery on Stefan’s niece and you found a way to make this about you? God, you truly have a gift, Elena.”

9 Elena: Beating Caroline In A Fight

Elena and Caroline come to blows in season four’s “Bring It On.” After a humanity-less Elena torments Caroline and the cheerleading team at Mystic Falls High, Caroline attempts to stop her only for Elena to get the upper hand in the fight and nearly stake her friend to death.

Caroline is an older vampire than Elena, but Elena was trained by Alaric whilst she was human. Her combat skills give her an advantage over her friend, who is almost killed until Stefan shows up to save the day.

8 Caroline: Letting Liam Live

Even without her humanity, Caroline is a practical person. She tells Elena and Bonnie that she intends to keep her humanity off for a year and won’t kill anybody as long as she left alone. She proves this by sparing Liam’s life as she doesn’t want the bother of having to hide his body.

One of Caroline’s defining characteristics is her organizational skills and need for control. This is exemplified without her humanity. Caroline clings to her routine until a humanity-less Stefan convinces her to give up control.

7 Elena: Attacking Bonnie

Any love that Elena felt for her friends was turned off along with her humanity. After stealing Caroline’s dress, Elena attends prom and attacks Bonnie, nearly killing her best friend. However, the vampire underestimates Bonnie’s power and the Salvatore brothers have to escort Elena away before Bonnie kills her.

It is a great moment to see Bonnie finally fighting back after sacrificing everything for Elena. It is a humbling moment for the new vampire, who learns the hard way not to mess with a powerful witch.

6 Caroline: Compelling Liam To Operate On Sarah

This is a great example of how cruel a vampire without their humanity can be. In a bid to get Stefan to turn off his humanity, Caroline compels Liam to perform surgery on a very awake Sarah Salvatore, instructing him to cut out her spleen and then her heart.

Sarah is nearly killed in a grisly and gruesome scene that shows how far Caroline has fallen since the death of her mother. Elena manages to save Sarah but not before Stefan gives into Caroline’s demands, turning off his humanity and becoming a Ripper again.

5 Elena: Calling Damon And Stefan’s Bluff

After Elena tries to kill Bonnie, Damon and Stefan take her to the Salvatore Boarding House where they torture her in an attempt to force her to flip her humanity switch. Elena, however, calls their bluff by running into direct sunlight without her daylight ring. The Salvatores immediately save her from burning and Elena remarks that she knows they won’t kill her so anything they do is pointless.

Elena is smart enough to see how much she means to the Salvatore brothers and uses this to her advantage. She manipulates Damon and Stefan, who take drastic measures by enlisting Katherine’s help in reviving Elena’s humanity.

4 Caroline: Forcing Stefan To Turn Off His Humanity

Caroline was also smart and cunning without her humanity. She recognizes her feelings for Stefan and acknowledges that he is the only person who can bring her back. To prevent this, she forces him to switch off his humanity by compelling Liam to perform surgery on his niece Sarah.

This was a clever move from Caroline. She knew that Stefan and Elena would keep trying to force her to turn her humanity back on and takes drastic measures to prevent this by forcing Stefan to turn his back on his morals.

3 Elena: Her Team-Up With Rebekah

Elena and Rebekah become unlikely allies when the doppelganger turns off her humanity. After Damon brings her to New York, Elena ditches her boyfriend and meets up with the Original sister to hunt down Katherine and prevent the Salvatores from finding the cure.

Elena and Rebekah’s alliance is entertaining and it would have been great to see more of scenes with both characters. However, considering Rebekah caused Elena’s death and transition to vampirism, a life-long friendship might have been unrealistic.

2 Caroline: Her Killing Spree With Stefan

Caroline and Stefan without their humanity are a formidable force to be reckoned with. Both vampires go on a killing spree after Stefan convinces Caroline to let go of her control and they sleep together for the first time in between terrorizing the college campus.

Although this was a dark moment for the couple, it showed how much chemistry they share and how connected they are even without their emotions. They bring out the worst in each other without their humanity and bring out the best in each other with their humanity switched on.

1 Elena: Flirting With Stefan

The love triangle between Elena, Stefan, and Damon was the main focus of The Vampire Diaries for the first four seasons, with Elena breaking up with Stefan in season four after falling for Damon. Although she is dating his brother, Elena flirts with Stefan boldly when she turns off her humanity and it becomes apparent how similar to Katherine the new vampire is.

Elena acknowledges Stefan’s feelings for her and deliberately flirts with him to antagonize him. However, she makes it clear that her flirtation is merely physical as she feels nothing for either Salvatore without her humanity.
