There are multiple vampire shows that became famous – but The Vampire Diaries is one of the most popular ones. Not only because of its captivating story and intriguing characters. It also didn’t treat its heroes kindly. Whether vampires, werewolves, witches, or humans, the show’s heroes suffered, got hurt – and sometimes, they died.

Some of the deaths were tragic and sudden while others were expected. However, not all heroes stayed dead. Many of them came back, and some were so lucky they even died and returned back multiple times. It’s hard to judge realism in a fantasy show but some deaths on The Vampire Diaries were simply more believable than others.

10 Most Believable: Lexi Branson

Stefan’s good friend Lexi was one of the instant fan-favorites when she appeared on the show to celebrate Stefan’s birthday,  so it came as a shock when Damon killed her in the same episode.

It was all a part of Damon’s masterplan to drive away suspicion from himself. Lexi’s death was fairly quick – Damon staked her in the heart. Even if Lexi wasn’t a vampire, this type of injury would kill a human as well which makes it believable.

9 Least Believable: Jenna Sommers

Jenna was young and had a lot to live for, including her family and Alaric who loved her. She, unfortunately, died in the second season. Her death is one of the least realistic.

First, Jenna became a vampire, that’s one thing that can’t happen in real life. Then Klaus sacrificed her in a ritual designed to become a hybrid.

8 Most Believable: Liz Forbes

Caroline didn’t always get along well with her mom Liz. They eventually found a way to one another and Liz even dealt with the fact her daughter was now a vampire. Their new-found bond made it even sadder when Liz died.

Unlike other deaths on the show, hers was grounded in reality. Liz had brain cancer which is something that can happen to people even in the vampire-free world.

7 Least Believable: Jeremy Gilbert

Even though many people might wish for the opposite, there’s no magic in real life. Jeremy is one of the characters who died multiple times on the show but was lucky enough to survive in the end. His first death happened when Damon snapped his neck because he was angry at Elena.

Luckily, Jeremy was wearing the magical Gilbert ring at the time and it brought him back to life. Snapping someone’s neck is possible even though it takes a lot of strength. But sadly, there are no magical rings that would resurrect people.

6 Most Believable: Liv Parker

Liv Parker had the misfortune of being related to Kai Parker, one of the evilest villains on the show. Liv got together with Tyler and she was with him when she died.

It happened during Jo’s wedding when Kai decided to blow the place up and Liv was caught in the explosion. She would have succumbed to her injuries, but, at her behest, died a quick death instead at Tyler’s hands. This also allowed his werewolf curse to reactivate and heal his own wounds.

5 Least Believable: Tyler Lockwood

Tyler led a dangerous life as a werewolf and he stood against Klaus, one of the deadliest vampires who ever lived. Yet it was Damon in the end who ended his life.

The siren Sybill hypnotized Damon to kill Tyler, and he obeyed. Some people believe in the power of hypnosis but in real life, it wouldn’t be enough to make someone kill another person.

4 Most Believable: Carol Lockwood

Carol Lockwood and her son Tyler might not have been the most sympathetic characters. That didn’t change the fact the fans felt sorry for Carol and Tyler when Klaus killed Carol. He did it to get revenge on Tyler and it worked, since Carol’s death crushed her son.

Klaus killed Carol by holding her head underwater in a fountain until she drowned. That’s the type of murder a strong person could commit, vampire or no vampire. To make matters even worse, Klaus murdered Carol during Christmas.

3 Least Believable: Enzo St. John

Enzo and Bonnie were happy together and Enzo turned around a new leaf. Unfortunately, their shared life came crashing to the ground when Stefan killed Enzo.

Bonnie and Enzo went to take the cure that was stored by Elena’s sleeping body. Stefan, who had his emotions turned off at the time, showed up and ripped Enzo’s heart out. It’s a drastic death that would be almost impossible to achieve if one were a human.

2 Most Believable: Elena And Damon

Elena and Damon both died multiple times on the show – only to come back. But their most realistic death was also the final one. After Damon had become human, he and Elena led a long and happy life together.

They got married and had children. The final episode of the show didn’t specify how old they were when they died or why they died. However, it hints at the fact that Elena and Damon died of old age or natural causes.

1 Least Believable: Alaric Saltzman

Often the least believable deaths on The Vampire Diaries were the ones connected to magic and/or vampirism. That’s also the case of Alaric. In the third season, the Original Witch tied Alaric’s fate to Elena’s.

So when Elena drowned after the car she was in went over the Wickery Bridge, Alaric died too because of the magical bond between them. However, both Alaric and Elena later came back to life.
