The Voice alum Christina Grimmie’s brother and boyfriend are paying tribute to the late singer five years after her death. She auditioned for season 6 of the singing competition series with Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.” All four coaches–Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Shakira and Usher–turned their red chairs for her. She decided to join Levine’s team on The Voice. Throughout her journey on the show, she performed such songs as Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble,” OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars,” Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” and Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse.” During the semifinals, she landed in the Bottom 3 but received the Instant Save to advance to the following week. At the finale, she ended up finishing in third place, behind Josh Kaufman and Jake Worthington.

Two years later, Grimmie’s life came to a tragic end when an obsessed fan shot the singer during a meet and greet after a concert in Orlando, Florida. She was in critical condition and pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. According to police, the shooter, who ended up killing himself afterwards, was infatuated with The Voice alum and tried to change his look to make himself more appealing to the singer. In the aftermath, some experts claimed that the shooter may have killed Grimmie after realizing his love would never be requited.

To mark the five-year anniversary of Grimmie’s death, her brother Marcus Grimmie and boyfriend Stephen Rezza took to social media to honor the late singer. Grimmie said on Instagram, “Can’t believe it’s been 5 years. It’s strange how we grow accustomed to a new normal but also feel that huge hole that was left. I’m still amazed every day at the impact you’ve had on so many people, including me. Miss you sis.” His post was accompanied by a beautiful portrait of The Voice alum.

Rezza posted a long message to remember his late girlfriend, noting that it’s been five years since “life came crashing down.” He shared that he misses “racing around Hollywood with you. I miss being in the studio at Henson until the sun came up writing music & dreaming about our future together…I miss going on fun adventures with you. I miss staring into your cute lil face while you were being silly. I miss holding you.” He said he’s trying to mark June 10 as “a day of celebration instead of a day of sadness & grief” but acknowledged that it’s hard to do that.

Family, friends and fans can’t believe that it’s been five years since Grimmie’s passing. She died at the age of 22. At such a young age, she had her whole future ahead of her. She had a boyfriend who clearly loved her–and still does. She was popular on YouTube. She had a promising career in the music industry. She released an EP and album in the years before being on The Voice, and then another EP and album after The Voice. Her family has tried to keep her music alive by putting out some of her unreleased material. She may be physically gone from everyone’s lives, but The Voice alum is still alive through her music and the many memories made along the way.
