John Legend has revealed that the male coaches on The Voice sometimes drink alcohol while filming the show, and his beverage of choice is wine. The current lineup of coaches includes Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton. Shelton has been with the singing competition series since the very beginning. The American Idol superstar singer and the “All Of Me” crooner have become regulars since joining in season 14 and season 16, respectively. Jonas has been trading off his seat with The Voice coach Gwen Stefani over the past few seasons but will take another break when Ariana Grande joins the show as a coach for the very first time.

The Voice season 20 is closing in on the finish line. Just this week, the live shows began as the competition narrowed from a whopping 17 artists down to just nine. There are only two weeks left in the season. In the semifinals, airing next week, four artists will be eliminated, leaving just five to compete for the title in the two-part finale.

In an interview with Access Hollywood, The Voice coaches Legend and Clarkson revealed details on their beverage of choice while filming. Legend admitted that the male coaches indulge in alcohol on the show and revealed what he usually drinks on set. “I feel like the guys all have some adult beverages at one time or another. I also have water, but I usually have a little wine as well.” When pressed for more details, Legend said he prefers red wine and rosé.

The Voice‘s Clarkson, on the other hand, said, “I don’t drink on camera. You don’t want that, America. The only time y’all got me drinking on camera was when I was in Montana. And in all fairness, it was in my house.” Regarding that last comment, she’s referring to when The Voice did remote episodes last year during the beginning months of the pandemic.

Over the years, Shelton has joked about drinking while filming The Voice. In 2019, Shelton said in a video on social media that he likes to drink vodka. Being the typical country artist that he is, The Voice star Shelton has released several singles over the years about alcohol, including “The More I Drink,” “Drink On It,” “Sangria,” “Dive Bar” and “Straight Outta Cold Beer.” Now fans know that multiple coaches indulge on the set; it’s not just Shelton.

In a way, it’s surprising that producers allow the coaches to drink while filming The Voice. Maybe they’ve been told that it’s fine as long as they don’t overdo it. Andy Cohen’s Bravo talk show Watch What Happens Live openly encourages guests to drink, which has sometimes resulted in celebrities revealing a bit too much. That behavior is in line with a lot of the Bravo reality shows. The Voice, on the other hand, is more wholesome. But regardless of whether they’ve overindulged on air or not, the coaches have created entertaining television for the past 10 years, something that NBC is likely hoping to continue for many more years to come.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
