2017’s acclaimed indie horror flick The Void presented both masterful practical effects work and a Lovecraftian story, but will it ever get a sequel? As is true of every other genre, the horror films that tend to get the most attention are those made by major studios and released wide in theaters. That’s completely understandable, and there certainly are lots of great theatrical horror movies released each year. However, more than most genres, horror also thrives on what’s produced by independent filmmakers.

In fact, many of the most critically acclaimed or financially successful horror films of all time began life as independent productions, often getting snapped up and released to a wider audience after they’d impressed at festival screenings or otherwise caught on with genre diehards. When looking at the yearly best of lists put together by horror fans, there’s a good chance about half the entries will be indie fright flicks, some of which have yet to even get much notice outside of the horror community.

One of the best independent horror efforts produced in the last few years is The Void, put together by the Canadian filmmaking collective known as Astron-6. While not directly based on any specific story, The Void‘s cosmic themes instantly evoke legendary author H.P. Lovecraft, and its use of show-stopping practical effects to create Lovecraft’s unspeakable horrors serve to remind fans of 1980s classics like The Thing and The Beyond. So, will The Void 2 ever happen? Here’s what we know.

The Void 2 Might Happen, But Isn’t in the Works Yet

The Void was directed by the duo Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie, with Kostanski since going on to helm the surprisingly fun Syfy reboot Leprechaun Returns. In late 2018 Kostanski was asked about the prospect of The Void 2, and sadly, his answer didn’t exactly delight fans. According to him, he and Gillespie are overflowing with possible ideas for a sequel to The Void, but that the duo can’t make one without the cooperation of the first film’s producers. Could that happen? Sure, but Kostanski seems to think the chances of it occurring aren’t the greatest.

The Void 2 Story Possibilities

While Kostanski and Gillespie have yet to publicly discuss any of their ideas for The Void 2, we have some thoughts on where a sequel might go. Fans will recall that The Void ended with villain Dr. Richard Powell (Kenneth Welsh), looking rather Hellraiser-ish, succeeding in opening a triangle-shaped portal to a mysterious netherworld. He did this to bring his daughter back from the dead, although she returns as a horrifying Lovecraftian monstrosity. Protagonist Daniel refused Powell’s offer to join him and reunite with his recently deceased wife, tackling him into the portal and entering the titular void. Then, in a shot strikingly similar to the final shot of Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond, Daniel is seen holding hands with his wife Allison while staring up at a floating black pyramid.

The most obvious direction to go story-wise would be to follow Daniel and Allison’s journey into the unknown, and possibly reveal what lurks inside that aforementioned pyramid. The problem is that The Void wasn’t a high budget film, despite how good its effects looked. Doing a whole story inside the other dimension would probably require more resources to make viable than would be available. An alternate route could entail making that simply part of a sequel, while the rest concerns another group of characters who end up in a Lovecraftian situation. Either way, horror fans will likely be happy to accept whatever Astron-6 comes up with.
