The Walking Dead has seen characters come and go, but few have been more loved and mourned than Glenn Rhee. It’s not easy to make it through the zombie apocalypse without becoming cold and jaded, but Glenn shines a light with his sweetness and much needed sense of humor, even in some of the darkest of times.

Selfless and brave, he is always ready to put himself out there for the good of his friends, and he’s gotten them out of more than a few close calls. The lovable pizza boy has repeatedly proven his worth to the group, and he stole the fans’ hearts just as much as he did Maggie’s, all the way up until his tragic end. Let’s take a look at 10 quotes that make us wish that Glenn never left the show.

10 “Hey You. Dumb***”

“Hey you. Dumb***. Yeah, you in the tank. Cozy in there?”

Rick is trapped in a broken down tank, surrounded by a horde of walkers in the middle of an apocalypse-ravaged Atlanta. Things look grim…and then a friendly voice comes crackling through the tank’s radio with Glenn’s first lines of the series. Characterized by his playful humor and his willingness to lend a hand, the line breaks the tension of the moment and is a perfect introduction.

9 “Delivered Pizza. Why?”

“Hey, kid, what’d you do before all this?” “Delivered pizza. Why?”

Glenn is just as scared as anybody else, but what makes him stand out is that despite that fear, he still does whatever he can to pull his weight. If that means running through a herd covered in zombie guts, or going on a solo run for supplies, that’s what he does.

Armed with a surprisingly keen mind for strategy, Glenn is a steady source of risky but successful plans of action. Even Daryl is impressed.

8 “They Were Counting On Me And I Only Thought Of Myself”

“A bullet hit the wall behind me and I-I thought of you losing me, hurting. And I couldn’t take it, so I hid to stay alive.”“Glenn…” “No, no, no. No, you don’t get it. Rick, your dad, they were counting on me and I-I only thought of myself.”

Even Glenn’s selfish moments come from a place of love. He gets into bad spot with Hershel and Rick, and instead of helping them fight their way out, he panics. He hides. It’a rare moment of cowardice, and even though no one dies, Glenn is wracked with guilt. He admits to Maggie that he hid because he couldn’t take the thought of her being heartbroken if something happened to him.

7 “I’m A Glass Half-Full Kind Of Guy.”

“Bright side…it’ll be the fall that kills us. I’m a glass half-full kind of guy.”

Rick and Glenn stare up helplessly at their only means of escape from the herd of growling, groaning walkers below them – a lengthy, rickety, old ladder. Even in life and death situations, Glenn keeps his optimism and sense of humor as he offers the less than comforting reminder that even if the ladder breaks, at least they’ll die from hitting the ground and not from zombie teeth.

6 “You Honor The Dead By Going On, Even When You’re Scared”

“You honor the dead by going on, even when you’re scared. You live because they don’t get to.”

Life is rough for everyone, but sometimes it hits the younger ones especially hard. Carl goes through a rebellious phase and acts dangerously and erratically after his mother dies in childbirth.

Enid has an equally difficult time processing all of the pain and death around them. Glenn notices and reaches out to help, gently offering advice on how to honor lost loved ones by staying alive.

5 “Maggie, I Love You…I Should Have Said It A Long Time Ago”

“Maggie, I love you. I should have said it a long time ago, and it’s been true for a long time.”

One of the most beloved relationships in the television series is the love story between Glenn and Maggie. Though Glenn comes on strong at first with awkward flirtation and romantic gestures, Maggie is hesitant to “make this any more than it is”. When she says that she loves him first, it takes Glenn time to process it, but when he says it back, it’s a truly sweet and heartfelt moment.

4 “People You Love…They Made You Who You Are”

“People you love, they made you who you are. They’re still part of you. If you stop being you, that last bit of them that’s still around inside, who you are it’s gone.”

Not much is known about Glenn’s family before the apocalypse, and the show implies that he may not be sure they are alive or dead, but he understands loss and the pain that goes with it. Glenn has had a lot of time to think about all of the people that he’s watched die, and knows the right things to say when others get too caught up thinking about their own loved ones.

3 “My Blood, My Family Is Standing Right Here”

“No, Merle is your blood. My blood, my family is standing right here and waiting for us back at the prison.”

Glenn rarely reaches the end of his rope, but after Maggie and himself are kidnapped and abused by the Governor in Woodbury, Glenn has had enough. Daryl is still determined to go back for his degenerate brother.

In a whirlwind of anger and exhaustion, Glenn lets him know in no uncertain terms that he doesn’t care what happens to Merle. His loyalty is to Maggie.

2 “We’re Not Supposed To Let The World Die, And I Sure As Hell Am Not Gonna Let You Die”

“The world is trying to die. We’re supposed to just let it.”“No, you’re wrong. We’re not supposed to let the world die, and I sure as hell am not gonna let you die.”

Where would they be without Glenn’s optimism and hope? The world is falling apart a little bit more everyday, and sometimes, the most dangerous part isn’t the next shambling herd of zombies, but the other people. Even in the face of all of that, Glenn has a soft heart, and manages to say something kind to a scared, lost girl who is ready to give up.

1 “Maggie, I’ll Find You”

“Maggie…”“Buddy, you still there? I just don’t know. It seems like you’re tryin’ to speak…”“Maggie, I’ll find you.”

One of the most heartbreaking scenes in The Walking Dead history is the brutal execution of Abraham and Glenn. Negan is jovial in the face of the horrific show of violence, and whirls on Glenn with a surprise attack that hits him so hard, it leaves him bleeding and mutilated. Glenn struggles to speak, and despite the villain’s taunting, he manages to gasp out dying words to the love of his life.
