With so much bleakness and washed-out color in the Walking Dead TV series, it’s nice to see a burst of bright purple, and a personality to match. Enter Juanita Sanchez, aka Princess, a larger-than-life character who likes big guns, wades boldly into minefields, and lauds the benefits of bicycles as a superior form of locomotion.

Princess has only begun her journey with the survivors of The Walking Dead, but there’s a lot more of her to come. In preparation for the belated season 10 finale, and the upcoming season 11, here are some facts that Walking Dead fans need to know about Princess.

8 “Princess” Has A Meaning

The Walking Dead TV series gives a slightly different intro story for Princess in comparison to her comic book counterpart. According to her, she prefers the title over “Queen,” because the latter makes her “sound old.” That might be acceptable, but there’s more to it than that.

The comic book version of Juanita Sanchez calls herself “The Princess of Pittsburgh” as a direct reference to the city she resides in when she’s found by the scavenge team. The TV show makes a direct nod to the comics during a scene where she asks Eugene and the crew what the capital of Pennsylvania is.

7 She Had A Bad Childhood

The introduction of Princess to the Walking Dead TV series has so far touched only on the faintest aspects of her history. Fans of the comic know the reason for her happy-go-lucky behavior, which involved a rather difficult childhood.

Without spoiling anything for fans of the show, it could be said that Princess had it rougher than many people could possibly imagine. The way it shaped her personality helps explain many facets of who she is, and why she interacts with people the way she does.

6 She Is Accepting Of (Almost) Everyone

Princess is quick to give people the benefit of the doubt, which could be seen as a tremendous risk in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Her willingness to believe in people might have something to do with an inherent knack for reading them correctly at first glance.

When the scavenge team first found her, Princess was quick to extend a hand of friendship, even though it wasn’t immediately reciprocated. Despite her unfocused and irresponsible behavior, she never gave up trying to earn their trust.

5 She’s An Eternal Optimist

Despite her difficult childhood, Princess always thinks positively, and is willing to see the good in people, even if it goes against her natural instincts. While this optimist’s outlook does make her a likable character, it’s not quite as straightforward as one might expect.

The comic book Princess openly acknowledges that her happy demeanor is somewhat of a smokescreen to hide her own internal fears. Nevertheless, she’s willing to resist misanthropy in favor of kindness and love for her fellow humans.

4 She Isn’t Afraid To Be A Kid

The most ironic part of Princess is her willingness to be a kid, all the time. Her eccentric dress style, including the pink fur jacket and eye goggles, are straight out of a kid’s wardrobe, and she makes no attempt to hide it.

In reality, she might be attempting to live out the childhood she always wanted, but was denied. This Peter Pan personality might play a role in shaping how optimistic and child-like she is, despite her ability to see a situation through a very mature lens.

3 She’s Self-Aware

For all her zany and outrageous actions, none of it is lost on Princess. She knows exactly how she behaves, what people must think of her, and why they’re probably right to consider her weird. None of it truly matters to her, however.

Princess also puts herself in the shoes of those she meets, and tries to see herself through their eyes, which is a remarkably intellectual perspective. By acknowledging her own awkwardness, she helps build bridges of trust with those who might see her as a bit strange.

2 She Doesn’t Kill The Living

While her entire history isn’t known, Princess seems to refrain from killing human beings. To date, her only two innocent victims were a pair of horses that she unwittingly killed through a rather rash action.

She’s quite capable when it comes to slaughtering the undead, however. Princess has no fear of the walkers, and will happily wade into the fray with a gun in her hand to mow them down. In that respect, she’s probably far more trustworthy than most humans.

1 Her Pre-Outbreak Employment

Before the apocalypse hit, Princess didn’t have much in the way of long-term career goals. It’s revealed in the comics that she enjoyed brief stints in a coffee shop, a record store, and a retail store before everything went to pot.

Her lack of any career goals might have something to do with some of the elements mentioned above, from her rough upbringing to her unconventional personality traits.
