The Supernatural finale had mixed reactions among the fans, some loving it while others calling it the worst way to end their beloved show. Nevertheless, fans all over the world grieved its end and deeply missed the characters that they have grown to love and adore.

However, not long after this, spin-off rumors started fueling. Then it was soon confirmed that a Supernatural spin-off is indeed in the works, which will be a prequel to the show titled The Winchesters. A lot has happened since the prequel was first confirmed.

Prequel Confirmed In June 2021

Fans had been speculating about a Supernatural spin-off since the show ended, but it was confirmed in June 2021. Deadline revealed on June 24, 2021, that the prequel of the show is in development.

The article mentioned that the title of the prequel will be The Winchesters. It will center around the parents of the Winchester brothers, John and Mary Winchester, and will feature their love story.

Produced By Jensen And Danneel Ackles

The prequel is being executive produced by none other than the Supernatural star, Jensen Ackles, and Danneel Ackles, who also guest-starred in the CW drama. They formed a production company called “Chaos Machine Production” in partnership with Warner Bros. Television and this is the first show that will be made under this company.

This is what piques the interest of the fans knowing that Jensen Ackles, who knows Supernatural inside out, as he played Dean Winchester for 15 years, is involved in making The Winchesters.

Written by Supernatural Alum

Another Supernatural alum confirmed to join the project is Robbie Thomson. He was the co-executive producer of the show and he is writing the script for the prequel now.

Robbie came in the 7th season of Supernatural as a writer and story editor and turned into a producer in season 8. It is great that people who were so closely involved with the original show, will be behind the spin-off.

Dean Will Be The Narrator

Another thing that was revealed last year was that Dean Winchester will be narrating the prequel.  Jensen Ackles told Deadline, “I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

Dean Winchester still lives in the hearts of many fans and undoubtedly, this makes them most excited about the prequel. They will be getting their beloved character back in some shape or form and that is something to look forward to.

Jared Padalecki’s Reaction And Ensuing Drama

Ackles shared the link to the article on his Twitter, which resulted in a drama that no one saw coming. Jared Padalecki felt “gutted” as he tweeted that he wasn’t informed about this project and was upset that Sam Winchester has no involvement. In addition, he called Robbie Thomson a “coward” in one of the tweets and later deleted it.

Ackles came on the podcast, Inside Of You with Michael Rosenbaum and he told that he was shooting The Boys at the time and he hurriedly shared the article, thinking nothing of it until he came back in his trailer hours later and saw the reactions by Jared and others.

Reactions By The SPN Cast And Crew

Despite Jared’s dejected reaction, many cast and crew members of Supernatural shared their delight over the prequel news. Misha Collins kept things light by sharing a joke about Castiel joining the show. Fans were certainly intrigued by this as they speculated whether Castiel could make an appearance in the prequel or not.

Supernatural creator, Eric Kripke, also expressed his excitement over the prequel news. He tweeted, “When @JensenAckles first told me this story, I loved it. He @DanneelHarris & @rthompson1138 are the perfect people to make it. (The other perfect person is too busy Texas Rangering.). Thanks for carrying the torch, guys, go kick it in the ass. Proud of you.” Later, after seeing Jared’s tweet, he told that he thought Jared knew and apologized to him.

The J2 Reconciliation

A day after the Jared-Jensen drama on Twitter, Jared tweeted about their reconciliation. He and Jensen talked it over and Jensen explained to Jared why he wasn’t informed earlier about the development of The Winchesters.

Since then, they have appeared together in cons and things seem to be smooth between them. Both of them have talked about the incident in various interviews and insist that they are still “brothers” and support each other.

Possible Cast And The Storyline

Apart from Jensen Ackles stepping into the shoes of Dean Winchester again to narrate the series, there are no confirmations about the cast. The prequel will follow the lives of John and Mary Winchester as young adults before the Winchester brothers were born. According to Deadline, “The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.”

So Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith will not be reprising their roles of John and Mary Winchester respectively. Matt Cohen made it clear in the summer last year that he hasn’t been contacted to play the role of young John Winchester. He posted on Instagram saying that he is excited to watch the show with the fans.

Pilot Ordered By The CW

Recently, the show received a pilot order from the CW. So the production of the pilot must have started or will be starting soon. However, after the pilot has been shot, the show must get a series order from the network, and only then, it will air.

This is the third attempt at a Supernatural spin-off. Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters were previously pitched to the CW, but both failed to obtain a pilot order.

Fans’ Response

The show’s end may not have been to everyone’s liking, but Supernatural fans have supported the main cast members onto their next projects. Since the prequel is backed by Jensen Ackles, some fans are excited about what he would bring to the table. However, many fans have expressed their confusion over the premise of the show.

According to SPN canon, John and Mary Winchester were matched by heaven so that Dean and Sam could be born, the future vessels for Lucifer and Michael. So, their love story doesn’t seem like a worthy endeavor for fans to follow because their romance wasn’t technically real. Does this mean they will change the original canon of Supernatural or show the intricacies of their relationship while respecting the canon?
