UPDATE: 03/22/22 – CDPR has since confirmed its new Witcher game is not specifically The Witcher 4. Original article as follows.

CD Projekt Red has announced that a new game in The Witcher series is in development, believed to be 4, kicking off what could be a new saga of Witcher games. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched in 2015, but the series has received new video games over the past few years, such as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, and the franchise as a whole has made a successful jump to live-action TV, in the form of Netflix’s The Witcher series.

There has been a lot of speculation regarding a new entry in The Witcher video game series. Cyberpunk 2077‘s catastrophic launch and wave of negative press led people to believe that CDPR would announce a new game in The Witcher series to try and win back some of the audience upset by the game’s launch. The growing success of The Witcher TV show also meant that a new video game would be a good idea, to capitalize on the new audience for the franchise.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The official website for The Witcher video game series has announced that a Witcher 4 is on the way, teased as a “saga,” which could hint at multiple future releases (via Nibellion). It has been confirmed that this new title will use Unreal Engine 5, as part of a multi-year deal with Epic Games, which will lead to other games in the future that use possible iterations of Unreal Engine. A piece of key art was released, showing a Witcher medallion with red eyes, partly buried beneath the snow. No further details about the game have been released, such as potential release dates.

Unfortunately for The Witcher fans, details on the game are thin on the ground, though the choice of words used to describe the future Witcher game is interesting. The next title will kick off a new saga for the franchise, which could mean players won’t see returning Witcher characters like Ciri, or perhaps even Geralt of Rivia. All of this is unclear for now, but CDPR has previously stated the trilogy was intended as just that – a trilogy – which could mean it’s time for an adventure starring different heroes.

The Witcher video games use the same setting and many of the characters from The Witcher novels, but they tell their own story. As such, the developers of the new saga are free to start a new epic tale beyond that of Ciri and the Wild Hunt. The Witcher 4 can also finish unresolved plotlines from the older games. Fans might have to wait a while for more news, but it seems that Witchers will be returning to the world of video games in future entries in The Witcher series.
