The Witcher season 1 gave viewers a taste of what Ciri can do, as she has powers, but what are these abilities and what do they mean for season 2? Based on the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher premiered on Netflix in December 2019 and was an instant success, becoming the streaming giant’s biggest first TV season ever. Netflix knew what it has on The Witcher, and decided to renew it for a second season before the first one was released.

Instead of just focusing on one character, the team behind Netflix’s The Witcher decided to follow three characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of the season. These characters are the title witcher, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), an enhanced monster hunter; Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress with a complicated past; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra. Ciri and Geralt have an important history as they are bound by the Law of Surprise, and the end of The Witcher season 1 saw them finally finding each other, marking the beginning of their relationship. Season 1 also revealed that Ciri has powers, but what exactly are they is yet to be explored.

Cirilla is the daughter of Pavetta and Emhyr var Emreis (also known as “Duny”) and granddaughter of Queen Calanthe. As her parents died, she was the sole princess of Cira and heir to the throne, but it all got very complicated when Nilfgaard attacked. As Queen Calanthe was struggling to survive, she ordered Ciri to be taken to a safer place, but the young princess refused and let out a scream that shook the whole room. This powerful scream happened again while she was taken away by Cahir (where she used her screams to defend herself), and when she got into a trance in the forest, through which she recited a prophecy. Ciri’s powers will surely be explored in The Witcher season 2, as she will be taken to Kaer Morhen to begin her training, and if the series decides to stay true to the source material, then Ciri’s story is about to get interesting.

In the books, it’s revealed during Ciri’s training with Triss Merigold that the princess is a Source. In the world of The Witcher, a Source is a person born with a natural affinity for magical abilities, which once they bloom, are quite difficult to control. This can lead to bigger problems if the Source doesn’t receive help and can develop mental illness like catatonia. When Triss learned this, she also realized that there’s magic far beyond what she can handle and help Ciri control, and so Yennefer was introduced into Ciri’s life, as she had more experience with channeling and controlling her “chaos”, a.k.a. her magic. A Source’s abilities can be triggered by stressful situations, which is why Ciri’s began to bloom when Calanthe ordered her to escape. Pavetta was also a Source, as seen in the episode “Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials” where she screamed as Calanthe was about to stab Duny, throwing everyone around them to the wall, shattering the windows, and forming a maelstrom around her and Duny.

By being a Source, Ciri is not limited to just a specific set of powers and abilities, as she can use magic in general, but has to learn how to control it. The powerful screams she showed in The Witcher season 1 are just a very small taste of what she can do, and with proper training, she can become a very powerful character in the series, though she can also be dangerous as she has no control over the magic that goes through her.
