A couple of creatures from the universe of The Witcher were introduced in season 1 of the Netflix series, among those the dopplers. One of them took Ciri’s place at one point and had a confrontation with Cahir, but there’s one detail in that scene that might point at Cahir knowing he wasn’t speaking to the real Ciri. Based on the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher made its debut on Netflix in December 2019, becoming an instant hit. Aware of the popularity of the books and their video game adaptations, Netflix renewed the series for a second season before the first one was out, and fans are now waiting for it to get a release date.

The Witcher had a different way of telling the stories from Sapkowski’s books, as the crew behind the series decided to focus on three characters, with their stories taking place in different places and points in time, and their paths finally converged at the end of the season. These characters are Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), an enhanced monster hunter and the title witcher; Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra who was in the process of discovering her powers. Along the way, they came across various obstacles, the biggest one a battle between Nilfgaard and Cintra, and with that the presence of Cahir (Eamon Farron).

Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach is a knight from the Nilfgaardian Empire who was in search of Ciri, who fled Cintra when it was attacked. Cahir spent the majority of his time in The Witcher looking for Ciri everywhere, and when he finally caught her, Ciri unintentionally used her powers and escaped. After conquering Cintra, Fringilla learned Ciri was hiding in Brokilon forest, and so they prepared an attack, but Cahir, knowing that the army wasn’t the way into Brokilon, sought out the help of a doppler. These are shapeshifters who can take the form of any human or beast and adopt their mindset and memories, which allows them to take their place without being caught. The doppler in Netflix’s The Witcher is referred to as “the Adonis”, and Cahir used them to take the shape of Mousesack (Queen Calanthe’s friend and advisor) so Ciri would come out and follow him. Ciri figured out that it wasn’t the real Mousesack and escaped, but she was caught by Cahir.

Once alone with Cahir, it was revealed that Ciri was the Adonis, who left the real Ciri tied to a tree in the forest. Before that, however, there’s a small but very significant gesture that points at Cahir knowing something was wrong with “Ciri”. As she woke up, Cahir explained to her that that was the only way to get her out of the forest and that all he wanted was for her to fulfill her destiny. He then offered her water in a silver cup, which she refused. Cahir turned around and the camera focused on the cup, as a strange noise was heard begin Cahir, revealing “Ciri” now taking the shape of Cahir. After a fight, in which Cahir injured the Adonis, which allowed them to escape, Cahir murdered everyone in the tavern to make sure there were no more dopplers, with Fringilla later telling him that a simple test of silver would’ve been enough.

While silver cups in the universe of The Witcher might not be uncommon, there’s a subtle emphasis on the cup after “Ciri” refuses to drink from it, so it’s very possible that Cahir suspected the doppler had betrayed him and taken Ciri’s place, and all he needed was “a simple test of silver”. This detail is very easy to miss when watching The Witcher for the first time, but on a second viewing, it’s evident something was going on in Cahir’s head at that moment. With Ciri still in danger and the Adonis out there, this might not be the first and only time Cahir has a violent encounter with them, and he might not have a silver cup near next time.
