Netflix’s The Witcher season 2 first look photos are revealed of Henry Cavill’s new Geralt of Rivia costume. Based on the novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is set in a fantasy world full of all kinds of monsters, and the story follows the mutant monster hunter Geralt, played by Cavill. In addition to Geralt, The Witcher also follows Princess Ciri (Freya Allen) of Cintra and the powerful sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra). The Witcher season 1 premiered on Netflix in December 2019 and quickly became one of the streamer’s most popular originals. As a result, Netflix released or plans to release plenty of other content, including a making of documentary and an animated spinoff show.

Netflix seemingly had plenty of confidence in the show even before it became a hit, and renewed The Witcher for season 2 prior to season 1’s release. Although The Witcher season 2 was originally expected to premiere some time in 2021, it’s unclear if that will still be the case with production being delayed a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, The Witcher has been back to filming for some time now, with set photos offering new looks at some of the show’s other main characters, particularly Ciri. Now, new official photos offer a first look at Cavill’s return as Geralt.

On Instagram, Cavill posted two new photos from The Witcher season 2 of Geralt and his all-black Witcher costume. In addition to the photos, Cavill posted a caption featuring an excerpt from Sapkowski’s books about Geralt, who’s also known as the White Wolf. On Twitter, the official Witcher account posted the photos and a different caption, teasing Geralt’s new armor, while showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich confirmed the new costume and teased “battles and brotherhood” in season 2. Check out the Instagram and Twitter posts as well as the photos below.

“‘It may turn out,’ said the white-haired man a moment later, ‘that their comrades or cronies may ask what befell these evil men. Tell them the Wolf bit them. The White Wolf. And add that they should keep glancing over their shoulders. One day they’ll look back and see the Wolf.’” – From the writings of Andrzej Sapkowski @WitcherNetflix #Witcher2

In terms of the look of Geralt’s new costume in The Witcher season 2, it appears to be heavier that some of the armor he wore in season 1, which takes it a little bit away from the books, in which the White Wolf wears lighter protective gear. The design also somewhat resembles Nilfgaard’s armor from season 1, although the metal accents are different compared to the ruched look of the Nilfgaard army. In the second photo, it’s easy to see some claw marks on Geralt’s shoulder, but it’s unclear whether viewers will get to see what made them in season 2 or if they will have come from a fight that happens offscreen between seasons 1 and 2. In season 1, Geralt had a few costumes based in season 1 and it’s unclear if this armor is just one of many Cavill will don in The Witcher season 2.

Of course, Geralt isn’t the only character getting new threads, as The Witcher season 2 set photos revealed Ciri’s new costume. The Cintran princess traded in her lush gowns of season 1 for what looks to be a training outfit, which hints at the intertwining stories of Geralt and Ciri in season 2. The Witcher season 1 finale ended with the two finally meeting up, and it’s presumed Geralt will take Ciri to Kaer Morhen, where he was trained to become a Witcher, so that he can train her. It’s unclear if Geralt’s new armor will come from Kaer Morhen or somewhere else, but it’s nevertheless exciting to see new official images from The Witcher season 2. Though it may still be a while before the show returns with new episodes, The Witcher season 2 is in production, which means more new looks are sure to be revealed in the coming months.
