The Witches of Eastwick remake movie is in development at Warner Bros.. John Updike’s 1984 novel about three New England women coming under the spell of the literal devil was first adapted into a film in 1987. Jack Nicholson starred as Satan himself, alongside Susan Sarandon, Cher and Michelle Pfeiffer as the titular Witches of Eastwick. Mad Max’s George Miller directed the film from a script by Michael Cristofer. The movie went on to gross $63 million domestically on a budget of $22 million. It snagged a pair of Oscar nominations – somewhat of a disappointment given the star power in the cast – including one for John Williams’ score.

Now Warner Bros. is setting up a Witches of Eastwick remake with Ninja Thyberg set to write and direct (via Screen Daily). The Divergent team of Doug Wick and Lucy Fischer is producing. A start date for shooting has yet to be determined but the movie will film in the U.S..

Writer-director Thyberg is currently a hot name on the festival circuit thanks to her feature film debut Pleasure, about a young woman leaving Sweden to become a porn star in Los Angeles. Obviously Thyberg will bring a very different perspective to the material than Miller did when he directed the original film in 1987. Indeed, the perspective should be a big switch from the source novel, which has been criticized for being misogynistic. The Witches of Eastwick was previously made as a TV pilot in 1992 and 2002 but neither of those were picked up to series. ABC did air an adaptation entitled Eastwick in 2009 but the show didn’t make it out of its first season.
