SPOILER WARNING for New Mutants #15!

As far as outlandishly absurd movies go, Sharknado is a frontrunner. Directed by Anthony Ferrante, the film has gained a fairly substantial following, thanks in large part to its over-the-top action scenes. The movie was so popular, in fact, that it had five sequels, and now, even the X-Men are joining in on the action.

Ever since they made their way to Krakoa, the X-Men have been looking for new, creative ways to combine their powers. One prime example of this is the Five, a group of mutants who, working together, have made it possible for other mutants to be resurrected after their deaths. With such an incredible advancement, the X-Men are focusing much more closely on the synergy that can occur when mutants come together, referring to these instances as “mutant technology.”

In New Mutants #15 by Vita Ayala and Rod Reis, the New Mutants are teaching Krakoa’s youngsters about mutant synergy and the results are pretty incredible. Within the issue’s pages, readers are able to see a few different power combos in action. Tempest uses her powers to douse her teammate, Armor, in flames, creating a move appropriately named “fire armor” and Cosmar uses her reality warping powers on Anole to turn him into a giant, terrifying monster in a move called “nightmare evolution mode.” Even one of the oldest examples of “mutant technology” gets a callout, as Scout and Sprite attempt to recreate Colossus and Wolverine’s famous “fastball special.” Despite this obvious reference, there is one other power combo that looks awfully familiar.

The mutants known as Rain Boy and Shark Girl team up during this exercise to unleash a move called “carcharodon cyclone.” Rain Boy uses his powers to create a water tornado which sends Shark Girl flying toward Armor to deliver a swift uppercut. While their intent is cleverly hidden by a synonymous name, the two mutants are clearly trying to create their own Sharknado.

The “carcharodon cyclone” may be meant as a funny shoutout, but combined with the other synergies shown by Krakoa’s youth, it also represents a new way of thinking for the X-Men. In the past, most mutants have only focused on their own powers, but learning to use their powers effectively with other mutants can open up a brand new world of possibilities. Recreating Sharknado is one thing, but given the diversity of mutants on Krakoa, there is nearly limitless potential as to what they could create. New Mutants #15 from Marvel Comics is available in stores now.
