The X-Men have their own version of Superman, Monet St. Croix, who may actually be more powerful than the Man of Steel himself. Most comic book readers tend to assume Superman is Earth’s most powerful superhero and it’s easy to understand why since his solar-charged body possesses a frankly insane range of abilities. As the old saying goes, he’s faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a steaming locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single point – and that’s just the beginning of it.

But because Superman is so insanely powerful there are countless Superman-equivalent heroes that would follow in comics. Some of them are pretty obvious riffs on the Last Son of Krypton, such as Hyperion, who originates from another dimension where he is the last of the Eternals. Amusingly, the recent Heroes Reborn arc revealed Hyperion’s weakness is Vibranium, which has exactly the same effect Kryptonite has on Superman. And Marvel recently introduced another Superman analog, Taegukgi, South Korea’s ultimate superhero – making his debut in an “Evil Superman” plot where he was under mind-control.

Even the X-Men have their own version of Superman, although it’s easy to forget she packs that level of power. Monet St. Croix was introduced as a member of Generation X, a young and powerful mutant who had been trained by the teleporter Gateway prior to making her way to the X-Men’s Massachusetts Academy. She possesses all of Superman’s most basic powers – flight, super strength, super speed – and even her mind moves infinitely faster than the human norm. What’s more, Monet has enhanced senses such as night vision and super-hearing.

But the truly remarkable thing about the character is there’s a sense in which Monet St. Croix is even more powerful than Superman. In addition to possessing all his staple abilities, Monet is also a powerful telepath, experienced enough to resist the White Queen’s mind control on occasion. She’s a telekinetic as well, even having the limited ability to project matter in some form of concussive force. Given all Superman’s own powers are physical, the psychic boosts give Monet a serious edge compared to the Man of Steel.

And it gets even crazier than that, because Monet possesses a strange mutation that binds her to her siblings. In the modern X-Men books, with the mutants living on the island of Krakoa, she appears to have gained precision control of these abilities – allowing her to morph into a Penance form in which her skin is razor-sharp and she has deadly talons. One thing’s for sure; the X-Men‘s Superman analog is not to be underestimated.
