Warning: This story contains spoilers for the Mythic Quest season 2 finale.

Rob McElhenney doesn’t have any ideas for Mythic Quest season 3 right now. Hailing from the comedic genius minds of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia veterans Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz, Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest focuses on the video game studio that produces the titular hotly popular MMORPG and its blend of chaotic, quirky employees. The show stars McElhenney, Ashly Burch, Jessie Ennis, Imani Hakim, David Hornsby, Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi, and F. Murray Abraham among its ensemble, with top-rated performers like Anthony Hopkins and Snoop Dogg appearing in cameo roles. Throughout its run, Mythic Quest has been widely acclaimed for its diversion from the workplace comedy formula and smart writing, and with its latest season 2, the show has solidified its place as one of TV’s best comedies.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Mythic Quest season 2 ended with episode 9, “TBD,” on Friday, June 25, with a thrilling cliffhanger that absolutely reordered the characters’ status quos within the show. The employees at MQ almost all split, with Ian and Poppy leaving to work on a new game, Brad going to jail, and the testers – Dana and Rachel – quitting to pursue their respective careers in coding and writing. Now after the events season finale, the fate of the eponymous game hangs up in the air, leaving fans curious as to what to expect from a third season, if it happens. However, it now appears that fans will wait a bit longer to know what adventures await the MQ employees in the future, as the Mythic Quest creators haven’t started working on season 3 yet.

In a recent conversation with Collider, Rob McElhenney revealed that he doesn’t have any ideas for Mythic Quest season 3 at the moment. In fact, he isn’t even thinking about the show right now, as currently, his entire focus is on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 15, which has already begun filming in Los Angeles. McElhenney says that writing for a show, unlike acting, is a continuous process that keeps him occupied wherever he goes. So he has learned to not think about it until it’s the first day back in the writers’ room.

QUESTION: That being said, is there a Season 3 percolating in your brains?

MCELHENNEY: No, not yet. That’s only because I have to go do the other show. And I learned from years and years of like, when you’re acting, you show up at a certain time and then when you’re done, you leave. But the problem is with writing is that you’re never free from it. It’s always in your head when you’re walking around, when you go to the grocery store, you’re walking the dogs. It’s always there, unless you can compartmentalize and stop those thoughts. So I learned a very long time ago, which is I do not start thinking about whatever I’m working on until the first day of the writer’s room.

Although McElhenney hasn’t started planning for the next iteration of Mythic Quest, the show’s stellar cast members already have several ideas for what the show could tackle next. Nicdao, for instance, recently remarked that season 3 could follow Ian and Poppy through a new relationship dynamic. Other actors like Hornsby and Ennis are also quite confident that the show will return for a third season. In fact, Hornsby has already teased that the potential new season could include some new matchups. The season 2 finale has opened the door to several new opportunities, so hopefully, McElhenney will have plenty to choose from once he begins work on Mythic Quest season 3.

Of course, all this will be relevant when Apple TV+ officially orders a third season for the show. The streamer has been quite generous in handing out renewals, as so far, it hasn’t axed any of its scripted content. Plus, the odds for Mythic Quest scoring a renewal are also high. The show’s second season has clocked a 100% approval rating on Rotton Tomatoes, up from season 1’s 89%. Thus, it’s quite likely that, impressed with its strong reception and rabid popularity, the Apple-backed streaming service will commission Mythic Quest for another season. Once it’s renewed, then there are a lot of directions McElhenney can work towards for season 3. Obviously, the new show will have a more individualistic approach than the previous seasons, as the characters are mostly all off on their own journeys. But hopefully, the characters will ultimately get back together, once again hilariously toiling to create something amazing.
