Warning! Spoilers ahead for This Is Us season 6, episode 7.

It turns out This Is Us star Jon Huertas is just as much in the dark about the future of the show as viewers are. Huertas became a series regular in season 2 of the hit NBC show, portraying the future husband of the widowed Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and stepfather to Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown). This Is Us viewers have taken sides as far as which of Rebecca’s husbands they like more, the late Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) or Miguel. Those on Team Miguel appreciate that he was able to give Rebecca companionship after years of being widowed, while others feel Miguel’s friendship with Jack makes his relationship with Rebecca disrespectful to Jack’s memory.

However, Miguel won the hearts of many skeptics in This Is Us season 6, episode 7, titled “Taboo.” During the hour, ’90s-era Rebecca and Miguel finally expressed how much they care about each other. The moment was heartfelt and endearing and gave viewers the context for their marriage they were looking for. With Kevin’s compound under construction in the present-day, Miguel inquired if it would have a guest house for any non-family visitors, which didn’t sit well with Kevin. The reasoning for this inquiry came to light when it was revealed that Rebecca would likely need 24-hour home care due to her Alzheimer’s and that an extra room would be required for the caretaker. It was also revealed that should Miguel happen to die before Rebecca does, Kate would be the decision-maker about her care.

As viewers know, Miguel hasn’t been seen yet in the This Is Us flashforward while Rebecca is on her deathbed, which begs the question of what happens to Miguel. In a recent interview with People, Huertas was asked if he knows what the future holds for the character, but as he revealed, he knows only a little more than viewers do:

We don’t get the scripts for the episodes until sometimes a week out. [Creator] Dan [Fogelman] keeps us very much in the dark, keeps it close to the vest so that we don’t tell people like you what’s going to happen and get in trouble. [laughs] So I’m not 100 percent sure of how the show ends. And I kind of like it that way. I like being an audience member who gets to follow along with the audience on what’s going on. I know a little while ahead of everyone else, because I’m on the show. I’m shooting it, but we haven’t shot that episode yet. We’re only shooting episodes 13 and 14 right now. We’re shooting them together. We will have to wait and see.

It makes sense Huertas doesn’t know exactly how This Is Us ends just yet. As he notes, they haven’t filmed the conclusion of season 6 yet, and scripts are often in flux up until production on an episode starts. Additionally, This Is Us is known for shocking plot twists, and the finale will likely have many. It’s understandable that those behind the show want to preserve spoilers so viewers have the best experience possible.

It’s interesting to hear Huertas doesn’t mind being kept in the dark to some extent. Thanks to the show’s multiple timelines, it’s a little easier for actors on This Is Us to be surprised by what happens elsewhere on the show. With This Is Us season 6 wrapping up the series’ run on May 24, hopefully, there are some more teases about Miguel’s future in store.
