Is Super Mario really a bad guy? It is time to put your thinking caps on, because there are some wild accusations circling the Nintendo HQ that the tubby Italian plumber could actually be hiding a villainous streak under his red underalls. He may be known for crushing innocent turtles or hurling fireballs, but this a whole new level of darkness.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that mud has been slung Mario’s way, and since his inception in 1981, there have been frequent rumors that he is altogether more sinister. Introduced in arcade platformer Donkey Kong, Mario was then known only as “Jumpman,” who was intent on saving his girlfriend from an angry ape. However, returning for the sequel a year later, Mario was anything but the hero. Donkey Kong Jr. had Mario out for revenge and this time imprisoning DK in a cage while brandishing a whip. The whole premise of the game was for Donkey Kong’s son to rescue his father from clutches of the evil Mario.

However, the latest slander to face Mario comes in the wake of Nintendo Switch’s upcoming Super Mario Odyssey. In the latest of Mario’s 250+ games, our titular lead can spin his little red cap and enter the body of pretty much anyone or anything on his quest for stars and princesses. It is a pretty handy trick to have up your sleeve and fits in nicely with Mario’s previous reinventions like flying hats or the the F.L.U.D.D. pack. We have all seen the cuddly Kirby suck up opponents to gain their powers in a similar fashion, but artist Sam Logan sees Odyssey as having a more sinister motive. Logan took to Twitter to mock Nintendo with the idea that Mario is actually unfairly possessing those poor creatures:

If you think about it, it isn’t actually that hard to discredit Mario as the hero we all think he is anyway. He basically goes around picking money off the floor and refusing to hand it over to the authorities. He is also an advocate of supporting illegal highs like mushrooms and promotes road rage/dangerous driving in his Mario Kart series. All in all, it isn’t looking good for Mario, but possessing people is a whole new kettle of fish.

Logan’s tweet (obviously) went viral across Twitter and Tumblr, however, it seems that the gaming giant isn’t too impressed with a very public knocking of the iconic character. Wanting to set the record straight, Nintendo replied with possibly the sassiest tweet you will ever get from the company:

Nintendo’s response that Mario “captures” people with his hat isn’t much better that possession really. Trying to nod toward Mario’s hat being called Cappy, the “Cap-tured” element doesn’t quite work here. Remember that the whole premise of the game is to rescue Princess Peach after she has been “captured” by Bowser. So, is Mario actually some Jabba the Hutt slaver who captures innocent bystanders for his own twisted entertainment? There already some pretty dark Mario theories out there, but this one takes the biscuit. Possessing, capturing, or just teaming up for the good of the Mushroom Kingdom, make your own mind up when Super Mario Odyssey is released on the Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017.
