Director Taika Waititi jokes that his upcoming Marvel movie Thor: Love and Thunder won’t be completed until the end of June, or perhaps even right before its July premiere. Currently, the movie side of Marvel is gearing up for the May release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but several pairs of eyes are already looking ahead to the next project on the calendar. Thor: Love and Thunder will mark the first time an MCU hero gets a fourth solo movie, with Chris Hemsworth returning to play his loveable god of thunder. Currently, the film is scheduled to premiere on July 8, more than half a year after its original November 2021 date.

Plot details for Thor: Love and Thunder are still being kept tightly under wraps. Aside from Hemsworth, the returning cast includes Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster; Waititi has confirmed Thor 4 will see Jane assume her Mighty Thor persona from the comics. The Guardians of the Galaxy will also have small roles in the film, and Christian Bale will make his MCU debut as the villain Gorr the God Butcher. Beyond all that, Thor: Love and Thunder remains a sizable mystery.

That could be because, according to Waititi, it isn’t even finished yet! Speaking to Variety while at the Independent Spirit Awards this past weekend, Waititi was asked to spill “everything” about Love and Thunder. He quipped that he already has, and that there’s not much to say now as it hasn’t been completed. On the topic of when the movie will be finished, Waititi joked:

“It comes out in July, so probably like… end of June? Or like a day before the premiere? That’s how we do it!”

In a pre-pandemic era, fans likely would’ve already gotten a trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder by now. Marvel has a history of debuting first looks at their summer releases within the first months of the year, but the pandemic seems to have thrown things off. Additionally, with both Doctor Strange 2 and Disney+ series Moon Knight (which premieres at the end of March) closer to release, the studio is likely more focused on those. All of those are viable reasons for Thor: Love and Thunder remaining such an enigma, but the movie’s completion also likely has a lot to do with it.

Filming on Thor 4 took place last year and managed to avoid the lengthier delays that beset other Marvel productions. Still, Waititi has a pretty packed slate right now, between Thor: Love and Thunder, the HBO Max pirate series Our Flag Means Death, and sports flick Next Goal Wins. It’s no wonder then that post-production for the Marvel film is still ongoing. Luckily, with the July release still in place, Waititi has plenty of time to complete the movie. Let’s just hope he isn’t cutting it as close as he joked he would.
