Thor: Love and Thunder‘s Honest Trailer mocks the MCU movie’s wild tone shifts and constant jokes. After the massive success of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi re-teamed with Chris Hemsworth for this past summer’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The film followed hot on the heels of Sam Raimi’s somewhat divisive Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, introducing audiences to a version of Thor that was in the midst of a midlife crisis and feeling conflicted about being a superhero while also doing battle with Christian Bale’s new villain, Gorr the God Butcher.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Thor: Love and Thunder may have earned somewhat middling reviews, but the film has been a strong box office contender, having earned over $758 million globally. In addition to Hemsworth, the latest Thor adventure sees the return of a number of familiar characters, including Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, aka Mighty Thor, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Waititi’s Korg, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor: Love and Thunder, while somewhat divisive, has been praised for Bale’s performance as Gorr the God Butcher and its handling of Jane’s cancer storyline. The film also introduces several fun characters that hint at what’s to come in the MCU, including Russell Crowe’s Zeus and Brett Goldstein’s Hercules.

Now, not long after the film was added to Disney+, Screen Junkies has taken aim at Thor: Love and Thunder with a new Honest Trailer. The video mocks the film for its jarring tonal shifts and its constant joking, which often comes at the expense of meaningful character moments. The funny video also pokes fun at the overuse of Waititi’s Korg, the incessant goat screaming, and Thor’s familiar character arc. Check out Screen Junkies‘ video below:

Thor: Love and Thunder resonated with many viewers, but the film has divided fans far more than Thor: Ragnarok. While Waititi’s humor in Thor: Ragnarok was one of the film’s strong suits, many felt that it dominated too much of his second Thor outing, taking away from the impact of Jane’s very emotional cancer storyline and Bale’s refreshing villain. Although Gorr is largely seen as one of the best aspects of the film, the video raises a valid complaint about the fact that he doesn’t actually do very much god-butchering, hilariously pointing out that the only god he actually kills on screen is in self-defense.

It remains to be seen whether Waititi and Hemsworth will collaborate once more on a prospective sequel to Thor: Love and Thunder, but some fans are evidently keen on Thor 5 to be at least a little more serious. Waititi is known for his ability to tackle difficult or emotional subject matter with humor, and while this humorous approach to Thor did strike a chord with many viewers, it also left others feeling let down, especially since Thor’s arc in Avengers: Endgame saw the character act as the butt of a barrage of jokes. Although divided on the quality of Thor: Love and Thunder, most audiences are united in their desire to see Hemsworth return as Thor for another film, just perhaps with fewer jokes.
