Warning! Spoilers ahead for Beta Ray Bill #5

In the latest issue of Marvel’s Beta Ray Bill, following the Korbinite warrior’s quest for a new weapon, Thor Ragnarok’s Skurge the Executioner arms himself with an impressive weapon of his own, getting to hilariously live out his greatest dream in the latest issue. Having traveled to the hellish realm of Muspelheim, Skurge initially feels out of his element in the face of the massive fire demon Surtur whom Bill meets in battle. However, Bill’s sentient ship Skuttlebutt comes up with an epic plan to assist him which all hinged on Skurge himself.

In prior issues of Beta Ray Bill from Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer, Bill had intended to venture on his quest to replace his broken hammer Stormbreaker on his own, going solo no matter what challenges lay ahead. However, fate had other plans with Skurge making his presence known as a stowaway. He had decided to reject the afterlife of Valhalla due to its sore lack of firearms for him to enjoy, joining Bill for some much-needed entertainment instead. MCU fans should remember the Executioner’s love for guns, like the rifles he named Des and Troy that he’d taken from the land of Texas in Ragnarok.

Now, Beta Ray Bill #5 sees Bill openly brawling with Surtur for the right to wield the Twilight Sword, an immensely powerful weapon that also carries the ability to turn Bill back into his humanoid form. While Bill had convinced Surtur to fight him hand to hand like a mortal, Surtur eventually grew tired of the duel and was about to unleash his full power upon the Korbinite. However, Skuttlebutt came up with a plan to absorb the energy from the shockwaves of their blows, using it to power herself up and transform into a ridiculously massive gun for The Executioner to fire at Surtur, bringing tears of joy to Skurge’s eyes.

Naturally, Skurge’s shot was perfect, which gave Bill enough time to claim the Twilight Sword and use it to behead Surtur, officially securing the Twilight Sword for himself and completing his quest. Not only that, but the battle’s aftermath saw the Valkyries arriving to help tow the heroes and Bill’s ship out of the hellish Muspelheim. Skurge made the choice to go with the Valkyries back to Valhalla, having fired the biggest and most powerful gun of his wildest dreams. Feeling fulfilled, it seems as though the battle with Surtur was exactly what The Executioner needed to be able to finally be at peace with his time in the afterlife.

In any case, Skurge’s role in Bill’s quest was no doubt one of the best elements as he essentially forced himself into helping Thor’s warrior brother while also committing himself to be Bill’s wingman along with Pip the Troll. Whether Bill liked it or not, he found friends and allies in his quest to get the Twilight Sword, and he most definitely would have failed without them (especially if he hadn’t had Skurge and his massive gun). While the story of Thor: Ragnarok’s Executioner seems to have come to an end in the Marvel Universe, here’s hoping Beta Ray Bill is prepared for the next chapter of his life now that he has such a powerful and coveted weapon in his possession.
