Rachel House, who played Topaz in Thor: Ragnarok, doesn’t think her character will return in Love and Thunder. The upcoming movie will be the fourth in the Thor franchise, making Chris Hemsworth’s hero the first Avenger to receive that many solo films. Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will return for Thor: Love and Thunder, as will Natalie Portman, who was absent from the third movie. Her role is one of the film’s most exciting, as her character Jane Foster will become Mighty Thor, exploring a popular storyline from the comics. Additionally, Tessa Thompson will return as Valkyrie, with the actor recently teasing some other MCU characters may be back for Thor 4 as well.

Thor: Ragnarok is widely considered to be one of the franchise’s best movies and many hope the elements that made it a success are present in Thor: Love and Thunder. In Ragnarok, Jeff Goldblum put in a memorable performance as Grandmaster, the ruler of Sakaar who forces Thor to battle Hulk. House played Topaz, Grandmaster’s bodyguard and the head of the Sakaaran Guards. Topaz was shown to be fiercely loyal to her boss, chasing Thor, Hulk, and Valkyrie down when they escaped Sakaar. Topaz ultimately died in a crash after Hulk inadvertently released some fireworks from the craft he and the other Revengers used to escape.

Due to Topaz’s death in Ragnarok, House thinks it’s unlikely her character will be back in Thor: Love and Thunder. In a recent interview with The Movie Dweeb, the actor said:

I think she’s gone-ers. I’m almost 100% sure that Topaz will not be seen again…I’m about 99.9% sure that I will not be in the next Thor.

House’s statement doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering Topaz’s death is quite final in Thor: Ragnarok. Additionally, it’s hard to see how her character would fit in to Thor: Love and Thunder without Goldblum’s Grandmaster. If Topaz had survived the previous film, it would be easy to have House stop by for a quick cameo appearance. However, the combination of Topaz’s death and Grandmaster’s absence in Thor: Love and Thunder means House’s assumption is likely correct.

It’s also worth noting Thor: Love and Thunder already has quite a large cast. In addition to the returning players, Christian Bale will make his MCU debut as Gorr the God Butcher in the film. Some of the Guardians will also appear, building anticipation for their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. All told, Thor: Love and Thunder has several characters and storylines to service, and it makes sense House’s Thor: Ragnarok villain may not be a priority. However, surprising returns have certainly happened elsewhere in the MCU, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
