Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Mighty Valkyries #1

Marvel Comics’ The Mighty Valkyries #1 reveals the true name of its newest Valkyrie, based on the version seen in the MCU played by Tessa Thompson, first seen in Thor: Ragnarok. While this new Valkyrie is actually ancient, she had long been held hostage within the body of a corrupted Celestial, at least until she was freed by Jane Foster’s Valkyrie during Marvel’s King in Black event. Now, while Jane is on Earth helping Loki and this new Valkyrie is seen traveling the stars in search of answers, which is is how she eventually learns her forgotten real name.

The Mighty Valkyries #1 comes from writers Jason Aaron and Torunn Grønbekk with artists Mattia De Iulis and Erica D’Urso, seeing Aaron co-writing with Grønbekk along with De Iulis to depict Jane Foster’s story with Loki, while Grønbekk and D’Urso tackle the new Valkyrie’s tale in space. While Jane Foster finds herself helping Loki who’s being hunted by the sons of the Fenris Wolf, the showstopper of the issue is definitely the new Valkyrie getting the answers she’s been searching for.

The issue sees the Valkyrie having found a great oracle to get her answers (as seen on galactic TV), though she believes he’s legit and hiding in plain sight, though imprisoned by his security, only providing answers to the questions asked by paying customers. Paying a rather large sum to get the VIP treatment, the Valkyrie is fast-tracked near the front of the line, where she shocks the crowds by asking not one, but two questions: what is her name, and why is she here? Before the guards can even react to her breach in protocol, the oracle responds that she’s come to honor the promise she made to the woman she once loved, another ancient Valkyrie named Alta, a warrior whom the oracle himself raised. He then reveals the Valkyrie’s true name, and she instantly recognizes it as her own.

At this point, the crowd and the guards are in a frenzy, but Rúna the Valkyrie keeps going with her questions, asking the oracle if her powerful axe Jarnbjorn will be able to break the dome he’s trapped in. When he confirms it will, she then asks him if he’s ready, right as the guards prepare to open fire. Cleary, Rúna is prepared for an epic fight with a renewed spirit now that she remembers who she is. Apparently, she had left her name behind when she abandoned Asgard (much like her MCU counterpart). However, it looks as though she’s ready to be a true Valkyrie once more with the return of her true name.

While this is a big development for the character, one has to wonder if Rúna will also be the true name for Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie in the MCU, which has yet to be confirmed as well. While fans will just have to wait and see if Thor: Love and Thunder features a similar reveal when it releases in 2022, fans can hold themselves over as The Mighty Valkyries continues from Marvel Comics, as this first issue is only an epic beginning.
