Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor – particularly in his last handful of outings – has been one of the most interesting and emotionally resonant performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, Thor has stood among the franchise’s most hysterical characters, and as the Russo brothers built on that, a tragic layer has been added to the character with depression and alcoholism.

Of course, Hemsworth can take most of the credit for this. Thor has enjoyed plenty of funny moments, and plenty of sad moments, throughout the MCU. So, here are Thor’s 5 most hilarious lines, and his 5 most heartbreaking, in the MCU.

10 Funniest: “I Knew It!”

Avengers: Endgame was filled with moments of fan service, and the most prominent example is Steve Rogers summoning Mjolnir. It was hinted in Avengers: Age of Ultron that Steve could lift Thor’s hammer when Earth’s mightiest heroes each took turns trying to pick it up at a party in Stark Tower.

When the God of Thunder is being pummeled by Thanos in Endgame, Mjolnir flies into Steve’s hand and an elated Thor cries out, “I knew it!”

9 Most Heartbreaking: “You’ll Die For That!”

The opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War undoes Thor: Ragnarok’s happy ending in spectacular fashion. Thanos and the Black Order invade the Asgardians’ ship, the Statesman, and kill most of the people on board.

Thor is restrained by metal beams and forced to watch as his best friend and his brother are both killed in front of him. A desperate Thor promises Thanos, “You’ll die for that!” And he does, eventually.

8 Funniest: “We Know Each Other! He’s A Friend From Work!”

Thor is overjoyed to see that the Grandmaster’s champion, who he has to face in a gladiatorial match, is his old teammate, the Hulk. This line was suggested by a Make-A-Wish kid who came to the set of Thor: Ragnarok.

When they were setting up the scene in which Thor faces the Hulk, the kid said that Thor would know the Hulk from work, and the filmmakers decided that it was funny enough to put in the movie. In fact, it even became the backbone of the film’s trailers.

7 Most Heartbreaking: “I Went For The Head.”

Marvel fans spent the year after Avengers: Infinity War wondering how Earth’s mightiest heroes would defeat Thanos in their last stand against the Mad Titan. So, they were surprised to find that he was killed off in the first 20 minutes of Endgame. They tracked him down to a remote planet and demanded that he hand over the Infinity Stones.

However, he says that he used the Stones to destroy the Stones, and all hope is lost. Then, taking Thanos’ advice from Infinity War, Thor lops off his head with Stormbreaker. But given everything they’ve lost, it’s not a heroic triumph; it’s a somber occasion.

6 Funniest: “Give Me That. You Have The Little One.”

Thor and Steve Rogers have always been two of the closest teammates in the Avengers, because they’re both “the old guys,” and they’re also battle-hardened war veterans with plenty of combat experience. So, they can often be found fighting together.

In the heat of battle in Avengers: Endgame, when Thor has Mjolnir and Steve has Stormbreaker, Thor decides to switch weapons: “No, no, give me that. You have the little one.”

5 Most Heartbreaking: “Don’t Say That Name.”

When Rocket and the Hulk head down to New Asgard to recruit Thor for the “Time Heist” following the five-year time jump in Avengers: Endgame, they find that he’s in a really dark place.

After failing to stop Thanos, he started drinking and fell into a deep depression. The Hulk mentions Thanos and, with tears in his eyes, Thor says, “Don’t say that name.”

4 Funniest: “The Rabbit Is Correct, And Clearly The Smartest One Among You.”

It was a great decision to team up post-Ragnarok Thor with the Guardians of the Galaxy. As a cosmic Viking warrior with a zany sense of humor, he fit in perfectly with the band of intergalactic outlaws who also have a zany sense of humor.

In particular, Thor developed a hilarious rapport with Peter Quill, who feels threatened by him, and Rocket, who he thinks is a rabbit.

3 Most Heartbreaking: “If I’m Wrong, What More Could I Lose?”

After losing his mother, his father, his home, his brother, his best friend, and most of his people, Thor thought he’d hit rock bottom. He told Rocket that he was going to kill Thanos, and that fate willed it so, and Rocket suggested that he could be wrong. Thor told him, “If I’m wrong, what more could I lose?”

But as it turned out, he had a lot further to fall. When he confronted Thanos with his new weapon, his vanity allowed the Mad Titan to complete his diabolical plan and wipe out half of all life in the universe.

2 Funniest: “I See You’ve Copied My Beard.”

Thor’s arrival on the Wakandan battlefield in the third act of Avengers: Infinity War is one of the most awesome moments in the movie. As he fights his way through legions of Outriders to get to Thanos, he bumps into his old pal Steve Rogers and they trade some banter.

They haven’t seen each other in a few years, so they have a lot of catching up to do. Thor spots Steve’s grizzled Secret Avengers political fugitive beard and cracks, “I see you’ve copied my beard.”

1 Most Heartbreaking: “Let Me Do Something Good, Something Right.”

After the success of the “Time Heist,” the Avengers place the Infinity Stones into the Iron Gauntlet and it’s ready to be donned by one of the heroes who will snap their fingers and bring back everybody who disappeared.

Since Thor feels personally responsible for allowing the Decimation to happen in the first place, he wants to be the one to do it. The other Avengers don’t think it’s a good idea, because he’s not in the best mental state, but Thor begs Tony to let him do it: “Let me do something good, something right.”
