Marvel Comics has just released a new trailer for the next arc coming to their Thor series from Donny Cates and Nick Klein. Thor #9 promises to feature all-new threats and big reveals for the God of Thunder and new King of Asgard. The most notable one is the return of Thor’s old alter ego, Dr. Donald Blake. Thor will be seeking him out, hoping that Blake might somehow help him with his malfunctioning hammer, but this new trailer reveals that Thor might be getting more than he bargained for when he reunites with his human counterpart.

Thus far in Thor from writer Donny Cates with art by Nic Klein, the King of Asgard has not had a smooth transition to his new throne. He had barely gotten it warm when Galactus, the World Devourer, crashed down into Thor’s kingdom to forge an alliance in order to ward off the Black Winter star plague. Together, the pair went to several different key planets for Galactus to consume, and Thor himself was turned into a new Herald of Thunder. Naturally, this put Thor at odds with many of his allies, most notably Beta Ray Bill and Lady Sif. However, Thor managed to use his might as a god, king, and herald to kill Galactus and the Black Winter in one massive stroke. However, the Black Winter did not perish before showing Thor a vision of his own demise: Thanos, wielding an all-new black gauntlet in one hand, Thor’s hammer in the other with the Infinity Stones embedded within it, and a horde of reanimated corpses that were once Thor’s allies. Even worse was that all throughout the events of these prior issues, Thor’s hammer has been getting heavier and heavier while becoming easy for others to pick up. After confirming this in Thor #7-8, Thor is now seeking an old friend who might hold the key.

As the trailer reveals, Thor will be looking to reunite with Dr. Donald Blake in Cates and Klein’s Thor #9, the crippled doctor Odin bonded Thor within Thor’s very first comics run to help teach him humility and kindness. While Thor and Blake haven’t been connected for years, it seems as though Thor hopes that reuniting with Blake might give his hammer a “reboot” of sorts, thus fixing the issues he’s been having with it. However, the trailer reveals that something dark has happened to Blake. Something has changed and perhaps possessed him, leading him to look very much like a serial killer on a mission to kill gods (specifically Thor).

The trailer also shows that Thor’s brother Loki will become involved in the conflict, although the trailer shots do show him taking a knife to the throat courtesy of Blake’s dark new persona. Not only that, but a massive beast looks like it will be unleashed upon Asgard, which is just one more thing for the King to add to his to-do list.

The trailer does not paint a happy picture, showing Thor fans what Blake’s new personage is truly capable of, showing Thor walking through a chaotic and burning city street, seeing messages written in blood asking Thor where he is and if they were now in Hell itself, with bodies strewn about. Whatever Blake has become, Thor better be prepared to put an end to the slaughter and suffering. Hopefully, he’ll be able to free Donald and get his hammer fixed in the process.
