Warning! Spoilers for Thor #23 by Marvel Comics

In the conclusion of his upcoming God of Hammers arc, Thor is about to get a golden upgrade that makes the hero shine like never before. In a new solicit for Thor #23, the God of Thunder sports gold-tinged armor (which possibly could be a reflection of his powers) as well as a golden sword as the hero tries to continue without Mjolnir. The preview teases the next evolution for Thor and hints at where his journey might be going next.

In Thor’s current ongoing series, he’s currently without Mjolnir as someone has stolen his hammer from him. The All-Father of Asgard struggled as his hammer became heavier and decided to leave it with Captain America and the Avengers. However, the hammer quickly went missing, leading Thor on a quest to find his most trusted weapon. Future Thor stories tease a Mjolnir-wielding Thanos and the death of the Avengers, as well as an upcoming battle against the Hulk to prove who’s the strongest Avenger.

This week, Marvel Comics revealed its solicits for March. In Thor #23 by Donny Cates and Nic Klein, the God of Thunder’s ‘God of Hammer’ arc reaches its conclusion in dramatic fashion. The synopsis for the issue reveals Thor will suffer a “horrific and tragic loss,” leading the Avenger to become more determined than ever before to finish his latest fight. Big things are in store for Thor, as the solicit says by the issue’s end, his life will be forever changed. Check out the cover for Thor #23 by Nic Klein which features Thor’s armor and sword in action.

Klein’s cover features some nice details including some Kirby Krackles as Thor uses his powers. But, the most intriguing element of the image is Thor’s sword. Considering Thor writer Donny Cates loves giving his heroes and villains large swords (see God Country, the King in Black, and the Silver Surfer), it feels very natural to see Thor wield the weapon. The question is does the gold sword has the same capabilities as Mjolnir or at least make a decent substitute for his lost hammer? Or is it just his usual sword that’s been struck by Thor’s lightning? Check out a synopsis for the series below.
