Warning! Spoilers for Thor #23 by Marvel Comics

The God of Hammers has been defeated, as Thor used every ounce of his powers to smash his hammer Mjolnir to ensure the villain would be taken out for good. However, after the hero wakes up from a four-month-long all-sleep, he learns his hammer has been reborn and reconstructed into something new with a power Mjolnir never had before: Odin’s voice and, potentially, his strength.

Thor’s life and those of everyone he cared for came under threat of the God of Hammers, as a prophecy regarding the destruction of the Ten Realms and death of the All-Father started to become true before his eyes. Thor learned the God of Hammers was the living embodiment of his missing hammer, Mjolnir, and that it formed into a new creature alongside Mangog after being thrown into the sun by Jane Foster. Without his hammer, Thor watched as Mjolnir struck his father down, leading Odin to sacrifice himself to power his son with the Odin-Force. Now, Thor learns that sacrifice might have changed his hammer’s powers forever.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In Thor #23 by Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson, and VC’s Joe Sabino, the God of Thunder realizes the only way to stop the God of Hammers is to destroy Mjolnir. After taking them to Nidavellir, Thor uses the heat of a billion suns to undo Mjolnir. Grabbing the hammer, Thor begins to furiously smash it against the ground, undoing the legacy his father gave him as it crumbles into pieces. After spending all of his power and energy to destroy Mjolnir, Thor falls to the ground, only to awaken four months later, where Angela has informed him his hammer has been reborn. Thor is stunned to see his hammer put back together but admits he doesn’t feel magic pulsing from it. However, when he approaches the hammer and says a prayer for his father, Odin responds to him through Mjolnir.

It’s still not fully clear what powers Thor’s reformed hammer has, but being able to hear Odin from it suggests Mjolnir has become something new. With Odin dead, Mjolnir is a great vessel for him to live on through – as he could guide Thor as he continues to feel lost.

Mjolnir might not be the same hammer Thor is used to wielding but it being reformed into a new weapon with the powers (or at the very least, voice) of Odin makes for a fitting replacement for his iconic weapon. Readers can see Thor’s new hammer debut in Thor#23 by Marvel Comics, which is in comic book stores now.
